We always troll sometype of lure on a planer or downrigger for wahoo or whatever else that may running at deeper depths but have not had any success yet on this set-up. The only wahoo I have caught so far was around a wreck trolling natural cedar plugs tight to the boat for tuna, that day we were pulling at about 7 knots. What I was wondering is are there guys that are specifically targeting wahoo with planers or downriggers or are they just trying to cover different depths of the water column when trolling?
Each year it always seems like a good number of tuna/dolphin/marlin show up on the areas they do each year and you only hear of scattered wahoo taken here and there. Are there good numbers of wahoo in these common areas but not enough boats target them? By target them I mean hi-speed trolling 10 knots or better with deep diving plugs, skirted ballyhoo rigs on wire deep... etc etc. Lets say for example you designed a spread specifically for wahoo and trolled the canyon all day at 10 knots. Could you put together consistent catches? Is there anyone out there that does this? Or can you always have that one special wahoo lure in the spread and put together decent catches trolling 6.5-7 knots?
