Arrow Questions About Topsail Beach Area

Can you guys give me some ideas? I'll be going down to Topsail in mid-April and I might tow my 22'er down w/ me.

I've only been down once and I didn't take the boat and wasnt' there long enough to ask many questions.

Is there anything usually going on in mid-April that would warrant me towing my rig down ?? Ocean side or sound info would be great. Thanks !!

Mid-April is when things are just starting to get rolling down here. As with most everything on the coast, the fishing depends heavily on the wind and weather, especially earlier in the spring. On the ocean side there are almost always plenty of blues (school and chopper) and the false albacore should be hanging within 10 miles of the beach. As a general rule its just a touch early for the bigger runs of spanish but there should be a few starting to work there way in. Sea bass and grey trout can be caught on the near-shore hard bottom areas, and a few cobia might even be hanging around depending upon the water conditions. As far as inshore fishing goes, there should be plenty of drum in the creeks and bays and a few trout hanging out in the deeper creeks and ICW.

I would just play it by ear. If you have a good forecast (not blowing a gale!) for when you are planning on being down, It could most definitely be worth it. If not, well just save the time, energy, and money, and wait until it gets a little warmer!

Hope this helps, let me know if I can answer any more of your questions.

The drum fishing inshore should be really going well by then, as the water warms up. Spanish may be showing by then, but could be a little early.
When the time gets close, check with East Coast Sports in Surf City. They usually have a real good handle on what is biting and where. They have bait and tackle to help if needed.

A great guide is Capt Eddie Stuart in the Topsail Area. He is a sight fishing charter, and does very well poling in skinny water on the flats in the back creeks. If you are looking for something different, he can refer you to some of his friends who charter or maybe someone else can refer a different guide.

the reds are a great target for mid April, but don't hesitate to give Atlantic bonito a try. They can be found in the near shore rocks and reefs (diver's rock off Topsail is a reliable place). They are very game on light (10 - 20 lb) tackle, eat small spoons, jigs and topwater plugs and are delicious.
    Enjoy your stay at TI.
