ummmm - I don't think so. He was taking us for a boat ride. the day before we had caught two blue marlin I knew we were no where near where we should have been. green water no bait yadda yadda yadda. When I told the lodge manager/captain of the broke boat where we were he even got pissed. The guy had no intention of burning the neccassary fuel to find the fish. We were not using our GPS we were using his helm station GPS. Plus we were in brasil for christ's sake. what good are brasilean numbers gonna do a bunch of OC and VB boys.

I think the bank is 22 miles from the inlet but its the water along the bank you are looking for. after a day and half on another boat we had not yet seen a billfish but we found the water late in the day and it was about 38 miles from the inlet. the next day the capt didn't want to go that far again but insisted he keep running until we found the blue water. we did and we caught a big blue and a little blue. The following day we went on the boat I spoke about above. we stopped at 20 miles and never saw any of the conditions we saw the day before. no bait, no dolphin, no blue water. at the end of the day we finally caught a dolphin

So if someone from 2000 miles away from your home port gets to glance at your numbers you are going to worry about it? Personally I have no problem sharing with a brother, but that's just me.

Tourists need to remember that the worst place to get a referral to a charter boat is the hotel. The concierge or the head bellmen make a fair amount of money for charter referrals. Do your homework well before you leave home.

We had another scam perpetrated on us in Bermuda. We chartered Alan DeSilva and his De Mako for a day's charter since our cruise ship was docking at the Navy Yard. Alan met us at the cruise ship dock and away we went.

We had a great day with Alan and his mate. We caught a 90#Yellowfin and about a dozen nice Wahoo. Alan referred us to what he said was a nice restaurant right at the Dockyard and told us they would cook our Wahoo. The mate did a great job steaking out several of the Wahoo and we went to the restaurant that was right off the dock after getting back from our charter. We invited Alan, his wife, the mate and his girlfriend to have dinner with us.

We made a reservation with the manager and gave him our steaked Wahoo. We told him that we would have a party of 12 or 14, I forget how many we had, and that people could choose their sides, etc. He promised to cook the Wahoo two different ways since we had so much of it.

Our party showed up right on time and the staff claimed not to know anything about a Wahoo dinner for our party. I went right into the kitchen and found the manager. He got red in the face and insisted he was taking care of it.

I got our party settled and we all had a drink or two when the dinner showed up family style. The fish serving platters had baked breaded filets that the manager insisted at the top of his lungs were Wahoo.

I know the difference between Wahoo steaks and filets of some other variety of fish and so did most of our party.

Our party got up and walked out of the restaurant. We caught late dinner on the cruise ship. What a rip off to an otherwise finest kind day.

    You keep the catch

On our charters, Brown Brothers Charters in Cozumel the fish belong to the client but I know of other operations whose owners keep the fish. They don't even let the crew keep them. We also let them know the options. If the big boys aren't around we have a sweet little bottom hole full of delicious trigger fish and some groupers, etc. We also suggest restaurants where they can go to have their fish cooked. If they are really cool tourists we may even cook them on the dock for them.

When they got back to the dock, people were lined up to buy the wahoo.

IMO, this kind of dishonesty is not good for the overall charter fishing industry.
Shady, one rotten apple has seemed to spoil the keys!
