Question For The Oregon Inlet Guys

Im not making this post to start a fight or anything like that but year after year the marinas from Oregon Inlet post pics in the fishing reports with blatantly undersized Makos in them. How do you guys get away with it? We would have Fish and Game all over us in a heartbeat in New Jersey.

Actually Andy, it must be an optical distortion from the camera shot. That Mako is clearly more than 54"

What I don't understand is why do these excellent captains allow their shark catches photgraphed and put all over the internet?--- you are right, you will see this at least a dozen times from now until June on the OIFS web site. Of course, OIFS has been known to recycle fishing pics as well

Happens every year yet they continue to post them and be proud of them.

F&G did go down and measure the dock boards one year after seeing a pick. Not sure if they ever issued any fines though.

If those decking boards are nailed 16"oc, the total width of the walk could be no more than 54", 24"oc would put it at 7' walk, from the picture its looks to be no more than 16"oc but the joist spacing could be non-standard/built to fit. Either way it does make it look bad, but then again it's really not any of my business.

Probably not but that would be hard to prove since it is mutilated.

GOOD POINT CAPT...... I'm going to say and I don't know that someone doesn't know the regs on that species. I really don't think it was from total disregard of the reg. I too have made mistakes in the past. I at one time fished out of the fishing center and I know its not the marinas policy to bring in undersized fish. I will call the marina and let them know that they should tell their Captains to know the regs. One other thing a lot of people don't know is that the fishing center is a consession of the park service and is under a federal watch eye. So a captain knowingly bringing in undersized fish could jeopardize his spot at the marina as well as fines.

I know almost all of th OI boys and can say without a doubt that they are NOT bringing in undersize fish on purpose. Fish and Game has come on my boat and checked me more than a few times. Not to mention when you back in a crowd of people are waiting to see what you caught. That Mako does look small.
