If you think the captains don't know the regs. The charter fleet doesn't get checked down their,(for the most part). NC is all about the good ol boys and thats why its the best state in the union. I know alot of the folks down their and they are all good folks. Stiff competition causes people to do things they shouldn't. I think this web site has been down that road before. I myself can't say i haven't taken a few liberties myself. Unless your their to measure the fish, you have no claim.

That mako ate the tail off the BFT and I couldn't measure it. Then the mako hit the prop. No sense in throwing them back dead. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

Maybe the mako was in the stomach of one of the Tuna

I don't know if you know exactly what you are talking about with this one. Those guys got it worse than we ever thought about having it up here Carson. The USCG, OIFC, and the state of North Carolina are all over them boys out there and they get checked as much if not more than anyone. There's a good ole boy system between the charter fleet. Most of the captains know most of the guys that would be stroking tickets down there, but just like anywhere else there is an understanding down there that you get your stuff right or there is consequences. They have a Coast Guard base on the fishing center premises and the beach around the bonner bridge is constantly monitored. And as good ole boy as you think they are, if an official would have seen that fish hit the dock, I will garauntee a ticket would have been written. That fish probably shouldn't have been taken and I would be willing to bet that it was just a bad judgement call on the fish's size at boatside and they didnt want to explain to their charter why the had to throw back an undersized shark after it had been gaffed. I'm not saying that it makes it legal, but I could see if you hadnt dealt with a shark beside the boat in a long time how the mistake could be made.
Now why the marina decided to broadcast it to the whole world... that seems like bad judgement too.
