Is this samson post IGFA legal and can this be used instead of a chair?
"The following acts will disqualify a catch:
....3. Resting the rod on any part of the boat, or on any other object while playing the fish."
Straight from the rule book, albeit from 2004 but I don't think the rules have changed any.
Not legal...
I don't know about any of this stuff to be honest. I think this has come up before and the conclusion reached was illegal. It seems to me that that roller is definitely a place to rest the rod.
If my memory serves me correctly one guy said he removed the roller for IGFA tournaments. I guess whether the aluminum tubing is a place to rest the rod or not is another debate if that route is taken. Seems like the rod might fly out of the gimbal though.
I was fishing in a IGFA Billfish tourney and we had to leave the roller at the dock or they would have DQ'D all of our catches , or we had to pull the post completly

It was ok'd by the tournament comittee ,that is all that was said ,there was another boat that had one and landed a sword the day before and they should have been DQ'D but they were locals
I am still unclear if that was IGFA legal without roller but we had a limited means of rod holders not to mention we had a 13 year old angler on the vessel and only 3 adults
I would e-mail the igfa and ask the question and print the e-mail

im sure you could still attach a harness to the reel, loose the roller , anyhow he if the rod would touch the roler its not upright enough ... jmo...dave
