question: drag settings
On a say a 50w tiagra and International with 80# mono while meat fishing for tunas etc... I have read 25 to 33 % main line breaking strength, all my reels are set a around 20 to 25 pounds at strike. While bill fishing what would you reduce the drags to? Thanks Taylor |

A fifty Im going to be between 16 and 18 with a full spool cold in the holder. On my white marlin and sail fishing stuff Im going to be around 4 lbs to 5 lbs at strike. Blue marlin stuff 100lb mono Im going to be around 23 to 25 at strike. Im not a big fan of alot of drag at strike I would rather have a broader range and go above the button. Thats just my way.

spot on. 20-25 @ strike is too high in my opinion. i like 18 at the pin, and usually troll 3/4 drag and push it to the pin as soon as it comes out of the holder. heres an invaluable habit to get into. mark with tape and a sharpie for the entire drag curve. from 0 to full drag, so you can adjust accordingly, and know exactly how much drag your using if you need to go past strike. it takes a little longer to set the drags but its well worth it. i usually mark 6#, 12#, 18#, 24#, and 32#. good luck |
