Monofilment is single strand line- can be clear or colored. It has more stretch than braid. Is usually harder to see in water-is very subject to abraison.

Braid is a woven fiber line. not invisible in water- braid does not stretch much. Most say that you can feel bite quicker. It is also abraison resistant.

Topshots can be mono with braid or dacron backing. Since mono is less durable than braid only the mono topshot has to be changed instead of dumping the whole reel. Also beacause of mono stretch it can serve as a shock leader.

jackdaniels gave you answers about the second part of your questions. Hopefully someone from the Oak Island area will give you info about local fishing.

When you start a thread it's important to put in the title exactly what it's about, that always help to get the info you are looking for.

The site is about fishing and *almost* every topic is about fishing or boats, so "question about fishing" isn't a thread title I would have choosen. I changed it to "question about fishing near Oak Island North Carolina" - much higher chances of local fishermen clicking the thread to read and post.

The offshore fishing can be really good that time of year down here. We usually start seeing dolphin in good numbers sometime in mid-late April and there is also a good shot at catching blackfin tuna and wahoo while trolling on the break during April. April and May seem to be the best months for offshore trolling in this part of the state.

I can't say too much about the pier/surf fishing that time of year because I don't do much of either. My guess is that it would probably be a little slow on account of cooler water temps on the beach, not sure though.

Are you looking to charter or bringing a boat of your own?

Peir and surf fishing that time of the year whiting seems to be most prevelant. They catch some blues, spanish, black drum, and pompanos along with whiting on the piers. As cold as the water has been it may be later before the kings show up close to the beach. Specks will still be caught around Lockwood and back in the creeks and marshes behind the island. Offshore that time of the year particularly near the Gulf stream is good. Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna and Dolphin and probably African Pompano hanging around Navy Wreck back in towards the Tower. Last year they slayed the Kings around Frying Pan Tower around the middle of April. Some friens of mine were commercial fishing and sold 1200 lbs from one day out there. If you can't get out to the Stream my second choice would be Frying Pan Tower and some of the places out there or around the Horseshoe area.

yeah april is a little early for the pier fishing. In may it really kicks off. Ocean Crest is one of the best piers in NC for all kinds of fish, kings, flounder, trout, drum etc. The only reason you will need a topshot is if you decide to pin rig off the end for kings and run into a tarpon, which sometimes happens.
