AKA......the Great Adventures of JD and Glenn.....
Word on the dock is that the bite has been a little slow in CR this season due to El Niņo....water temps in the high 80īs to low 90īs. Water for us both days was 86-87 deg F.
Weīre fishing aboard Big Eye Charters (bigeyecharters.com) with Capt Ross originally from the Vineyard and now a full time CR resident. Canīt say enough good things about Capt Ross and his mate Craven, but weīll get to all that with the full report with pics upon return to the U.S.
Started off Sunday with a gaffer dolphin right after lines in in 8 AM....weīre running 25-35 miles out from the harbor with some greenish/blue water water. We had our share of shots...went 3 for 8 on some 100 pound class sails with only 2 whiffs.....not a terrible day in the land of milk and honey.
Our second day was Monday.......went back to the same spot where we left off the day before. The morning troll brought nothing.....very little life and no bites until 11 AM. We went 3 for 5 with yours truly actually hooking two fish on circles with only a slight third degree burn on my thumb.....
After the second sail, a large hole opened up on the right teaser.....itīs a nice blue marlin...the mate pitched a split tail mullet back on a 30 set up
and the fight was on. Had her to the leader four times and after about 45 minutes we finally got her in the boat for a couple nice pics.....my first blue marlin a nice 200 pound class fish....
The third sail of the day came up on the right teaser and the mate pitched the split tail back and I was handling the right flat line trying to get a strike....felt tap-tap.....free spooled.....burnt my thumb....then eased up the drag for the hook up. The fish came to the boat pretty quick, but she was not happy....letīs just say for now that things got real up close and personal for a while......the pics will tell the whole story on that one.
Right before lines out, Capt Ross yells "MAR-LIN" from the tower as a hole opens up in the water on the left teaser.....the mate grabs the 50 setup and sends a 14" moldcraft blue/crystal back.....the man in the black tuxedo inhales it.......hook up attempt numero uno...MISSED......the big black marlin is not yet done....heīs back for another shot one more time and we couldnīt get a hook up.........oh well... thatīs fishing..... according to Capt Ross it was a THE fish we were waiting for.....300-400 pound class....
We have one more day tomorrow and weīre going out with a double hook rigged mullet 80 in our spread looking for the man in the Black Tuxedo...
Photos to come later.....update on Thursday......
