    Quepos 3rd Quarter Report

It is really not as far backing down to Panama as you might think.

    Oh yea, Grande Negro

Not many CR charter customers get to have a ride in from offshore in the pitch black. No extra charge for the extra 4 hours

Report to follow when JD sobers up........

I assume we are talking about a Grande Negro Fish....right?

On sailfish dink tackle that must have been quite the battle. Can't wait for the story.

Way to go guys, who was on the receiving end of that beating from Blackie? Or did you have to tag-team? I would think you would set aside your fundamental objection to cranking with a fish like that on the line. Can't wait for the story, slap the booze out of JD and prop him up at the computer so we can hear it.

    More Like Double Overtime.....

BTW...it wasnīt the Imperials.....it was the Margaritas at Wicked Wandas.....Sapphire & Tonics at the casino.......then.....

    Anyway...........

The morning started like the previous two.....EXCEPT.....there was an 80 with a mackeral double hooked rigged covered by a 14" pink/blue/white moldcraft in the spread. The teasers were supersized to 18".....On the way out there was plenty of life....birds.....dolphin...even some bonita.....BUT Capt Ross decided that this was not THE spot we were looking for. We continued to steam another 15 miles to the spot we had fished the previous two days since we were doing a little better than most of the fleet.

The first sail trashed the spread at around 10 AM...the bite had started eariler that the previous two days.....a good sign. The sail was again a 100 lb. class and was quickly dispatched. About an hour and a half goes by with no action then the second and third sail was hooked fought and released within a half hour of each other. OK...so now the bite is picking up and the afternoon bite the previous two days had been much better than than the morning. We get another two shots but yours truly whiffed one and the other one was never hooked.

Then it goes VERY quiet.....1 PM...nothing....2 PM...nothing...then at 2:30 Capt Ross hooks into something he called "a very strange hit". Glenn W gets the harness on and the fight begins. The radio starts to chatter with what this beast could be....a BIG wahoo some said....maybe a BIG yellowfin.....or could it be......maybe....the Man in the Black Tuxedo??.....we would not know the real answer for a VERY long time.......

Right after the hook up the fish dove and stayed down....we were lucky that we were only in 4000 ft of water... The fight continues after the first hour....now it`s 3:30 PM and most of the fleet is picking up and heading to the barn. They all call in to get an update from Capt Ross one-by-one....and itīs the same answer....no color yet and the fight is on......Glenn W is now asking for a cigarette as it is obvious that this is going into overtime. As the clock approaches 4:30 PM we have backed down over four miles and are headed to Panama for dinner. Glenn W now asks for the back harness and the mate straps him in. Capt Ross continues to try different strategies to get this beast to the surface.....end arounds....running forward....backing down...FAST...then slow....finally we find the right angle...the only trick this beast would respond to was backing down fast with the fish on the starboard side....she was finally starting to come up after 2 and a half hours....

Itīs now 5:00 PM and this beast has dragged us over 9 miles......Capt Ross yells down that he has color and as soon as he says that....she dives....Glenn W fights her to the surface.....the leader is within sight.....the mate leans over and grabs the leader.....itīs now an offical release....however she dives again but this time we only lose about 50 feet of line.....Glenn W fights her back to the surface.....sheīs clearly 500 lb PLUS... and YES....itīs Marlin Negro!!.......the sun is now seting in the West and Glenn W puts the heat on her....drag is up WAY past strike......itīs time to make THE move after 3 hours....Glenn W puts the heat on her leaning WAY back in the harness and then it happens.......something breaks!! .........as nightime falls Glenn W reels in a slack line that revealed a broken hook....looked like i had been work hardened from the battle......what a battle it was!! Glenn W was THE MAN on this day for sure.......500 lb Black Marlin for 3 hours and ten minutes ............. and oh yea....think I left on one small detail....this was on a 30 lb setup....

    Congrats Glenn!!
