    Professional Captains

Through years of observation and being in the business for a long period of time...

The true "professional" captains out there are working on their boats each and every day they are not out fishing. I was shown there is always something to do no matter the boat size or how much you think "things and systems are running OK".

Professional captains rarely ever lose a day on the water for their bosses or clients because their boats are always mechanically sound (with the exception of rare unforeseen mechanical disasters).

Professional captains don't have the time to be on fishing websites all day long. Specific charter captains come on periodically to report catches in an effort to drum up charters, which is understandable.

Professional captains always make sure every aspect of their fishing tackle is 110%, even though it's the mates job.

Professional captains realize that they are only as good as the mates that they train. These captains don't berate their mates in front of clients, bosses, or on these websites. They calmly call their mates up to the bridge to explain to them a better way of doing something if a mistake was made.

Professional captains don't come on trying to brag about this, that, and the other. Others do the bragging for them, and the proof is also consistently hanging from their riggers or in the box.

Professional captains don't need to justify anything because their characters are NEVER questioned in the first place. The respect shown to them is obvious.

I've had the pleasure of knowing and working alongside some of the greats in this business who are held in the highest regard. I thank them for showing me the right way to care for a boat and how to conduct myself out on the rip. I apply all that I have learned to my personal boat today. You know who you are.

Its funny I was just speaking to someone today about this subject. I asked the person why there wasn't more captains on this site.

Wondering what other reasons people think keep big name captains from chiming in on here.

Deepy this doesn't mean you. Please reread wiremans definition of professional captain.

I think Deep C violates everyone of those rules. Very good list of criteria. Deep C would have to become Hellen Keller to qualify, wire his lips shut and we at least have a start

Thats a great write up and VERY true. Having too worked along side Many great captains you really learn tons. Ive made mistakes.. some small.. some pretty decent. The captains have to know the line between yelling in front of customers.
The charter life is great.. You get to meet ALLOT of cool, nice people, hear there stories and get to know them, soon enough your taking them out monthly for years. Thanks for that write up tho.. Really put it back in me!

The best Fisherman, is the quiet fisherman.

I think the main reason you do not see alot of professinal captains on here is simple its because of the attitudes of alot of members on this site... Professinal captains are not going to come on here and post a resume so everyone knows who there are they may use a real name to login and not hide behind a made up one but as soon as they post up a suggestion or tip they get attacked by a weekend warrior and because of there professinalism they will not argue they just get driven away. I dont know maybe I am wrong but I am a professinal mate travel and fish all year and I have worked for some of the best in the business and that is the exact reason I don't spend more time on here.

I wrote my opinion and I get attacked because of a couple grammer eras. Instead of putting your view in, which im sure you don't have one, you give me **** about mine. Im sorry I skipped college to make something of myself in my fishing career.

The opposite of a keyboard Capt!

Very well stated WireMan and JBonnevti. I know many high quality Captains with more sea time and satisfied charters Who "aint got the time"! In fact My mentor (now fishin in heaven) was a man of few words and when He spoke it was profound. He would have never spent this kind of time defending all the Bs or babbling. He was busy makin plans , servicing the power and systems or with his friends or family. He truly loved sportfishing and the charter business. He lived on the sea and met His maker there as well. RIP Capt. Walt Hendee
