Its funny how members here ***** about the bitching but have no problem retaliating and keeping a thread alive. I have always (well almost always) said Its always better to let a stupid thread die. Believe me it makes to poster look like an idiot. Especially when the sole purpose of the thread is to get a thread count higher.

One thing that I noticed was missing in the description of the professional captain is the desire and drive to fish like its his first or last day on the water. I have been chartering boats all over for over 20 years. I have seen some of the best lose the drive to fish but not the desire to take someone's money and give them a boat ride. This is especially evident in my experience in the Keys.

Another topic that I see missing in the professional charter captain description is marketing skills. Believe me if you are a charter boat captain you not only need to be a hell of a fisherman, mechanic, boatsman, entertainer but also hell of a marketer. That is where a site like Sf.com comes into play. Over the last two years I have seen some incredible captains sitting on the pilings bitching at a lack of charters as they watch the same charter boats go out day after day. Sure those boats go out because they are good but also because they don't forget to market their product or at least delegate it to someone but not ignore it.

And BTW joe - I don't care if you couldn't spell cat if I gave you the C and the T. You are a hell of fisherman and I would fish with you anytime.

Not sure what you mean with your first statement but lets keep this going with Captains that we have fished with or know that are doing the things the right way. You have fished all over the world so who do you think is top notch based on what was said in the first post?

    Well said.

With those comments in mind I'd like to nominate Franky Pettolina and Mark Sampson to the list.

All good guys. Lets up the most recent boat that these guys are on so their body of work is a little more recognizable.

    Ryan -Viking factory team
    Mark - Canyon Runner
Keith - almost every top private boat in CM.
    Blane - Judge.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

these are just guys that I fished with that I would step on a boat with anywhere in the world.

    Jon Duffie
    Butch Davis
    Howard Lynch
    Rick Carney
    Marciel
    Butch Cox
    Brian Peele
    Glynn Loftin
    David Swain
    Shane Brafford
    Brian harrington
    Gary Stamm
    Arch Bracher
    Scott walker

    sure I missed a couple

There are some really good ones that I would never step on a boat with ever again but I won't mention those names. Well I will mention "run em over Ralph" He was a captain on a boat in another country. He got on the boat and didn't know how to operate the electronics a buddy of mine had to show him how to do it. Then we had an oil pressure light go off. He took the boat out of gear to to check the oil but didn't turn off the motors. He ran over my same fish 3 times in a single fight. And we promptly fired him in the midst of a triple header. He gladly gave up the controls and let Al take over the wheel. The next day I was driving down the road and saw him selling hot dogs and pupusas on a street car stand. yea don't think i wil fish with him again.

Bobby, I want to congratulate you for spelling every last one of them wrong!! But they are all good.

One I forgot was Mike Adkins of SJ Champion Fame. I once watched him maneuver on a blue, have a trim tab rip off, hop in the water (because his mates wouldn't go in "cough" me, "cough cough" blaine) tie the trim tab in place, climb back in the boat and get back to chasing down the fish. Which completed the grand slam for the day!! And never once did he raise his voice during that situation.

Something very interesting about some of these choices. Jonnie Duffie was Scott Walker's mate..... Blaine and i (although I am flattered, I probably should not be rubbing shoulders with some of these guys- but thanks Bone) were Jay's mates. I dare say all of the Fields boys fished with their pop for a while. Keith mated for Mike Adkins. etc etc. Coincidence? I think not.

Very good point. I guess that is one thing that makes some of these captains great. They teach their craft to others so it can be in turn used and passed down. I think that this is one of the best traits a captain can have.
