I wasn't looking to start a debate with my original post. I have fished Power Pro on all my poles for at least 5 years and never had a problem. Three years ago fishing in Mexico we had a blue come into the spread and examine each lure one by one. I had a small rig;10/0 Okuma Titus Gold reel (their smallest reel) on a 15-30# Chaos rod. with 40 lb. power pro and 30 lb. mono top shot. This rig had a dead mullet ready in case we saw a sail and the Mexican Captain threw it back towards the Marlin. Of course that's the one he hit. This reel not only had the light weight power pro line but the line itself had 3 different knots where I had just spliced on more line being to cheap to re spool since I never thought we would need that much. All knots were just double uni's. Well, 2 hours later we landed the Marlin even though a couple of times the line left on the reel was the size of a dime and the boat was backing down on the fish (with waves crashing over the transom) trying to gain some line back. Here is a picture of that fish and the rod and reel it was caught on

I always use the green pp spectra and usually the 65 lb. test. My bigger set ups have 150 lb. test with 100 lb. mono topshot. My heavy AJ and Grouper rod has 80 lb. pp and we have put hundreds of pounds of meat fish in the boat and never had a line break. My original post was just because I was seeing the red PP at about half the regular price and never having used red I was wondering if there was a problem.

Debate is good Zummie....Can you imagine how boring this place would be if we didn't debate?....I hope nobody got their toes trampled too hard. I don't think there are any problems between me and Spiney...at least not on my end.....
    It's all good.
Oh....and I have never used red.....just green, yellow, and white.....no problems ever though.

No problems here either, it would be a mighty dull world if everybody went along with everything and agreed all the time. I will say that PP makes good jig tying thread.

Only problem I have had with the red is the die getting on gloves and actually dripping on the boat while fighting a fish. It is a pain but haven't noticed any difference between that or the yellow except it looks better when it is faded then the yellow does. Also have had it on jigging setups for 3 years and we charter.

The green pp will drip dye as well when it's knew, not like the red does, but it will.

Alright guys...time for me to chime in:

I just saw this thread this afternoon so I apologize for it going 4 pages before I jumped in.

The reason that the RED PowerPro is on sale is because Shimano has introduced a new color called Vermillion Red in January to take the place of the original Phantom Red. The new Vermillion Red has a new dye on it that will not bleed such as the old Phantom Red did. Does the color on PowerPro as well as most all other colored braided lines fade after a while? Of course it does. (This is why WHITE PowerPro has been on my reels for many years--white is the natural color and does not bleed/fade.) Does that mean that the line has all of a sudden gone bad? No it does not. Simply means that the dye is gone from the line and now its back to its natural color--white.

Now for the second part---PowerPro failures. Have there been some issues with this in the past? Absolutely. I have personally seen bad spools of line that broke well under the stated rating of the line. The line on these spools was physically different from what normal PowerPro felt like and you could immediately tell something was wrong. The issues which caused these problems have been resolved and I can tell you first hand that I have not seen a bad spool in quite some time (unless it was sitting on the shelf for a while which means it was older). I understand that those who had problems with the line will never use it again because of confidence; however like others have said, there are bad batches of everything that exists on earth. I am not allowed to say how many machines PowerPro has at their factory nor am I allowed to say how much line is produced on a daily basis, but I can assure you that the factory is MUCH MUCH larger than I ever imagined. The process is not as easy as monofilament to make---each inch of the line has to be braided. When there are so many processes running at once, and so many yards of line going out the door every day, things can go wrong. As I said above, the problems which caused the extremely weak line has been solved and were solved quite some time ago.

    That's good to know.

It's too bad that we had to get an explanation on this forum as an accidental result of a post totally unrelated to the original problem. But I guess there really is no good mechanism to deal with situations like this. It's not like the auto or OTC drug market where lives are potentially on the line, just a bunch of ticked off fishermen.

    Just my 2 cents.

A complimentary spool of 65# would be a nice gift to the thread starter. LOL You can PM me for my shipping address.
