Port Douglas Australia Fishing report 4-28
Indifferent weather continues to plague current fishing reports with a mixed bag of results filtering through.
On the positive side there are some great reports coming through from the very upper reaches of our rainforest river systems. Using small lures, poppers and plastics there have been plenty of small barra, black bream, sooties and archer fish in an aggressive mood nailing these presentations. Overhanging vegetation and weed bed sections are popular haunts for these fish. Even though they are not something for the table they are however providing excellent sport.
As you you move into the systems proper, there are a smattering of mangrove jack and the occasional barra patrolling the small run of creeks anf lure and live baits have provoked equal action. There have been trevally and queenfish pushing right upstream on those bigger tides and harrassing bait schools in the deeper holes and by matching the hatch has produced the better results. Further downstream there have been some nice grunter caught on the rising flats and fingermark are biting reasonably well in the deeper sections holding plenty of structure. For those prepared to put in the time and effort mud crabs have added a special touch to a days catch.
Offshore the reef fishing has been hot and cold with each day dishing up contrasting results. The better days have seen large mouth nannygai, coral trout, cod species, spangled emperor, sweetlip and slatey bream make up the bulk of the haul. Sharks continue to be a problem and according to certain skippers they are are now in numbers where you wouldn't expect them to be. They at times have ruined what would have been a good days fishing. The biggest fish to be caught in the last week was a 60-70kg cod aboard Dragon Lady Charters which was released. The boys had their hands so full they forgot to take a photo.
There is no real pattern to the mackerel run as yet but in saying this there have been spanish, spotted and school mackerel caught at various times and one would expect this area to kick into top gear in the near future. In saying this the water temperature has stabilised with recent warm weather and will need to drop to see the pelagic action fire up. On the other side warmer water means the barra will continue to bite inshore.
