    POON MAN Question

I have a question. Why is everyone still using the old bronze darts. I have had them stick into the head of a bluefin and not pentrate the skull.

I switched over to a halibut style stainless dart that goes right through that thick head bone. It will come right out inside its mouth and lock down.

    Any thoughts here?

Seadraggin as you well know the bronze dart has been the dart of choice for 100's of years and i would guess it is the ease of manufacturing and the price

we have our darts poured by a local foundry and usually they come un -sharpened

the best way to sharpen them is with a mill bastard file on the first 1/2 inch of the leading point edge

i have not heard of any darts bouncing off a fish ?

Please let me see a pic of this halibut dart

I have seen the stainless halibut darts in a tackle catalog. However, I can't imagine a bronze "old style" dart bouncing off a tuna head Not if it's sharpened properly.

Dart material makes no difference. If anything will it is the shape. I CAN see how the halibut style dart will sink easier tho .

    Here's a few pics....

    Formula Thanks for the Pics

I don't think i would trust a Halibut Dart in large Tuna !!!

Not sure what the holding strengths would be once it enters I.E the purchasing surface area if it you did not button hole the fish ???

Good question for other's that have used this type of dart

I agree.....penetration is certainly there, but it is a small surface area to trust once the dart pulls sideways......on a Giant

    But maybe it works

i have seen halibuts stuck with that type of head. they are stuck thru the middle of the body and no bone has to be dealt with. worked like a charm on the 130 lb 'but i caught years ago.....but i just dont see it being up to the task of penetrating a tuna noggin
