Yeah, head up to Isla for some sailfishing!! It is the best start to a season I have seen yet.

You'll be about a one hour taxi/ferry ride from isla. The fishing here is incredible. Definetly something you might want to look into.

The sailfishing up around Isla is good and the boats know what they're doing. Puerto Aventuras is another good option if you're looking for a bigger boat/professional crew to go offshore. If you want to stick around Playa and not spend as much you have decent options as well with the Panga fleet. Most of the boats suck and have crappy equipment, but a few have their act together and can take you out for decent bottom fishing and inshore and offshore trolling. Ask for Eddie, he's got proper electronics and downriggers and a livewell.
If you're into vertical jigging (thats what I do there), you can clean house at the drop-off and shipping channel not more than a mile or two from the beach...lots of big Amberjack, kings, grouper, cuda and blackfin to be caught. You'll have to bring your own gear though.

Sit down Shut up And fish
These are all good answers. To clarify the location of Isla. . . first of all you are one hour from Cancun when you are in Playa. Once you get to Cancun, you go through town and past the hotel district to get to the ferry to Isla. So realistically you are 2-21/2 hours from Isla.
Isla is great and the sailfish are biting. If you go to Isla you will have two choices. The U.S. boats or the Mexican boats. Almost every single American boat will be operating illegally. (look for MAT #'s on the bow, you won't see them). The American boats charge American prices.
The sailfishing (which has kicked off splendidly) is on the opposite side of Isla quite a ways out. We are famous for our winds Jan thru March. They can be quite something. The resulting sea conditions can be too much for even the heartiest of fishermen.
For example, yesterday there was no fishing out of Puerto Aventuras due to sea conditions as dictated by the local port captain.
NOT he kind of conditions you want to try in a Panga. Actually the Panga drivers are smarter than that and stay home under these conditions.
The other option is fishing out of Puerto Aventuras. We are the main marina on the Mayan Riviera. Our sailfish season hasn't kicked in like Isla's yet but we are catching fish on the troll and bottom fishing.
We have resident sails and marlins year round but they can be hard to find during the offseason periods. However, with that said, we went out in October which is usually pretty dry for sailfish. We hadn't left the marina ten minutes before we had hooked our first one.
We have a 32' Blackfin down in Puerto Aventuras as well as boats up to 55'.
The Blackfin is decked out to the max with Raymarine E120 electronics and new line on our Shimano's. We are ready to go.
