I've been messing with a way to fish a planer with a release. Not interested in the bridal method. I was running a #8 old salty on a bent butt and Intl 50w. From that I rubber banded a a seawitch and hoo about 100' behind the planer on another 50w. I was using the black, UV resistant rubber bands and for some reason, just couldn't get them to hold longer than 15-20 minutes. I tried doubling them up, tieing them in a not, etc and they just wouldn't hold. I used virutally this same set up on other boats and had no problem with rubberbands out of the same package - what's the deal?
I was just going to try a larger rubberband, but was wondering if anyone has used those downrigger release clips? Will they hold at trolling speed of 5.5 knots while underwater?
Not sure by your description how you are attaching the rubber band to the braid? If direct, that may be your problem with the line cutting the rubberband. We use a double snap swivel and tie the rubber band to that. We set the planner first with a bead crimped about 2 feet before the planner that acts as a stop.
Yea, I was vague b/c I did it two different ways. One was with a two way swivle attached directly to the back of the planer. The second way was "Bay Style" with a small caribeener that clipped to the rubber band and release line and was then slid down the planer....I did not have a bead or stop in place, so maybe that was part of the problem.
man i came up with the easiest way go to hardware store and buy two brass clips i will try to send post but they are thumb operated and about 1" long... peel off about 130' on your 80 or 130 preferably and just crimp in two pieces of line about two and a half inches long and 15 inches apart.. clip your releases on the planer with a total length of about 17 inches and it works like a charm.. when fish hits planer releases and just unclip when reeling in fish , speed up a little to give you a little time to unclip rolls right on rod..same basic setup as all planer bridles but more simplistic
