    Planer North of the DMZ?

Ok, heres the deal. Every year i add one or two things to the arsenal on the rig.

This year i am looking to pick up some Japanese Style jigging gear (better left for the jig forum) and to add a planer to the canyon arsenal.

We usually fish anywhere from the Hudson down to the Wilmington, maybe Baltimore if something really good is holding there.

I hear of Planer rod setups being used with some great success down in the Carolinas. Anyone dragging them up here?

i know we do get wahoo up here in pretty good numbers from late July to Oct.

anyone had any success up this way with them? maybe on BFT or YFT? I know it seems like it might work well on early season schoolie BFT's (80-150 lb.) that are holding deep.

You are actually the man i plan on talking to real soon!

Well, either way. I am going to drag one this season. The idea quite frankly intrigues me. I for one will be putting together some detailed info on how it works.

I think it would work anywhere you go in the world. Its definetly a deadly tool when its used correctly.

Hummm. Well i have dragged a planer with a naked Bally under the spread up in the far North DMZ from the Hudson to Veach Canyon. And put it this way i'm thinking of pulling 2 this year. Just keep the damn Albacore of it.

I started pulling one last year with either a B/W islander & hoo or a red and black Ilander and hoo. I never caught a yft on it, but did get some nice dolphin and a 60 lb wahoo that saved a slow day.

    I'm sure it will work...

We've caught right many 70-120 Bluefins on the planer (#4 on up) using either a drone spoon or an Ilander with a bally (drone spoon is very effective). Also Wahoo, dolphin and some yellowfins. Again, the drone spoon has caught all of the above as well...but we will also pull a sea witch or small Ilander bally combo on this rig.

    Good luck...

    Glenn

ps - I fish out of VA Beach so we fish in similar conditions.
    Tight lines,

    Glenn
