    Pitch Bait-- New to Me

I try to learn something (good or bad) every time I go fishing. While in Costa Rica last week our boat used small (5.5"-6") split tail mullets for pitch baits.
The advantages---- a mullet will last all day sitting in a bucket of water; it is heavier than a dink ballyhoo so it can be shot out easier and faster; at least for the Pacific Sails, the mullet provided a somewhat bigger (fatter) profile so the fish can be pulled off the teaser more efectively; due to the extra weight and larger profile, the mullet responds instantly when moving it over from one side of the spread to the other.
I don't know how our Whites will respond, but I'll be giving this a go this year.

Glenn, I have always thought whitey likes to eat a little mullet better than any other bait. But also feel the hook up ratio is best with a dink.

We stick with Ballyhoo when pitching Sails. Mullet seem to make a better Marlin pitch. You really don't want a bunch of meat getting in the way of your hookup. I would think with whiteys little mouth and picky ways a mullet might be to much.

I mentioned this before but its from long ago, we always took finger mullet and rigged them for a flatt line bait we could easily move it around or drop it back and control it. that was before I pitched we just kept it in the spread while meat fishing and it was poisen for the white boy....I see no reason not to use a very small spit tailed mullet with a razor sharp hook properly rigged.Easy to picth, easy to stear and very effective and visible.

ive been pulling one either on my flat line just behind my dredge for years, good spot there cause i can pop it out of the clip to drop back to nething thats on my teasers and it looks like that weak stragler in the school of fish that is my dredge, if u get the real littles ones your hookup ratio shouldnt change, i have not had a noticable difference with mine. Anyone know a good way to rig them with circle hooks?

I would think you could nose bridle a circle on the small mullet faster than any other way of rigging. It works for mackerel.

You can bridle it straight off the nose and put an egg sinker in the eye socket. I have seen it done and the bait looked like it was going to swim right past the boat.
