Next time just cut the leader and don't bill it. When I bring a fish in fast and I know its hot I try not to bill it because it will end up going nuts on me. Just cut the leader and let it swim away. We'll still think you're a man even if you don't grab a hold of its pointer.

congrats on your fish! we caught one a couple weeks ago about the same size, also on a 50w and got him to the boat really quick. Pulled him up for a quick photo and received a white marlin tail spanking.

another suggestion is to keep you boat in gear and keep movin g forward about 4 knots.

Man up and bill the fish! Its just a little whitey. You don't want to join the harpoon club but if you got the bill theres little chances of it doing that especially on a small white. Getting your hook back is better for the fish and your wallet.

I did the exacted same thing two days ago, the charter wanted some close ups. all i heard from the captain the whole time i had his bill is "dont scratch the boat". those little things are powerful. good goin on your fish.
