Fished on the 59' Spencer BI-OP-SEA on Friday with some family and friends. After hearing an excellent report out of VA Beach on Thursday, headed NE as far as fuel prices would allow. Put lines in somewhere around the 000's and 40 fathoms. Birds swarming everywhere. 5 minutes in, a white plays with right squid chain teaser. Did not pick up any of the dropped back baits. As he was fading off, shotgun clicks and another bill is playing with dinkbait. Drop back and nothing. Troll North and get a few more knock downs and ZERO hookups. Must've been small small fish as the leader was chafed, but the bait was in almost perfect condition. The crew is agitated. Hear of a bite up North near the 050 in about 42 fathoms. Troll our way up there and find bait balls and cutters and birds working like crazy. Boats already there were hooking up with sails and whites, so it was a mattter of time before the whitey shows his nose on the left teaser and switches off to the left flat already being dropped back . Choked him and released him. Next came 2 whiteys, one on the shotgun and one on right long. 1 for 2 with the shotgun being the hero. Lines back in and another opportunity for a double and again ended with 1 for 2. Shotgun goes off and drop back and come tight just as right long goes off. I drop back and come tight just as shotgun comes unglued. Last bite of the day came on left flat with mate Chris sending a dink right down the hatch and hooking up our last fish. Ended the day with 4 releases with 8 legitimate shots and saw 10 in the spread.
Pics are attached. Most boats ended with 4-6 bills (sails and whites). Pretty good day. Very few meatfish caught. I did hear of one charter boat with a skunk on it still hard at work at 4pm. YIKES!!
