The 27th Annual Pirate's Cove World Class Billfish Tournament started yesterday with 69 boats and crew headed for the open seas in hopes of catching the winning fish and the six figure prize. The big question as the boats headed out of Oregon Inlet for day one of the 27th Annual Pirate's Cove Billfish Tournament was North or South. For several weeks there have been good numbers of sailfish in the area south of Cape Hatteras and to the north the white marlin fishing has been heating up. The boats that went North had the better day of fishing. 67 boats fished yesterday with 2 taking a lay day.

The weather yesterday was hot, but the winds were light and the fishing was great. Lines came out of the water at 3 pm and the boats were back at the dock starting after 5 pm. The highlights of the day were Uno Mas' 7 white marlin releases, Alexis' 69.10 lbs yellowfin tuna caught by angler Clint Evans and Jesus Freak's 69.2 lbs wahoo caught by Shay Traner on a Marlistar blue and silver Tomahawk lure. No marlin have been brought to the scales on Day 1.
