I have a friend going down to Peninsula Papagayo, Guanacaste, Costa Rica in one week. Does anyone have good charter suggestions here? it is over 100 miles from Los Suenos and I think he would like something nearby. would like to catch some bills.
I think most of the good boats from the north are already down around Carrillo for the winter marlin season so your friend might have to drive a little but it's not bad. A friend of mine fished on the Gamefisher 2 last week for two days and had a 500-pound black release the first day and a grand slam (blue, stripey, five sails) the second day, plus a ton of big dorado, so the fishing's pretty good right now, and should only get better.
My two favorites in Carrillo are Richard Chellimi on the Gamefisher 2 (www.gamefisher2.com) and Sonny Koscis on the Wetass II (no website but just Google it and you'll find 'em). Sonny doesn't run the boat much but his captain Rolando is just as good if not better than ole Sonny. The Wetass is a 31 Bertram and the Gamefisher is a custom 31 express. Both boats are top-notch in terms of crews, quality tackle, bait rigging and just the sheer desire to catch billfish. Can't go wrong with either one.
Good luck. I'll be back down there in a few more weeks, just marking off the days till then...
