PEI GBFT opening to sport fishing...

Looks like PEI might once again have a chance to reclaim it's title of "Tuna Capital of the World".

Man, I would love to get a chance at some "true" giants up there. For the ones who don't know, the PEI commercial fisherman killed 90mt in two days hook and line fishing for GBFT this summer & the Tag-a-Giant group tagged some of the biggest fish they had seen as well. These are not the little 300 to 600lb. dinks we are killing around NC... O no, these fish are 900-1200+ lbs monsters. True Giants by every meaning of the word. You can read more about the PEI fish on the Tag-a-giants site at: http://tagagiant.blogspot.com/search...ax-results=50I

I really hope this all works out for the sportfisherman as PEI has been my dream destination to catch one of these fish. One other interesting tidbit... a GBFT that had been tagged off NC in the mid nineties at about 300lbs. was recaptured by a PEI fisherman this summer at well over a thousand lbs. in the gulf of St. Lawrence, quite an impressive growth rate compared to what has always been thought would take over twice that length of time to achieve.

BAIT BAIT BAIT! The cannucks shut down pair trawling and severely limited fishing for forage fish. Gee, ya think we could learn a little something from this? If they re-instate rec fishing my guess is that, as in yers past, you'll have to go on a Canadian-flagged boat...

Thanks for the update capt. Jon. And the link.

Mark, They also had a moritorium on herring for many years in critical areas. That helped them a lot. last season the pairs that were pounding our banks up here, (jeffries, Platts and all around) were shipping a lot of that bait (Herring ) to Canada. Many Many Trucks. In my area most of the lobster bait came from dealers who had to buy it from Canada. I don't think we have learn anything about sustainablety, we have to learn How to change the POLITICS !!

The other thing not mentioned yet is they are so fat and full of oil you can't stand on the deck if it's real sloppy

Pounding isn't the word for it. I did a few overnighters E of Cape Cod last summer and it looked like the expressway at rush hour - from Stellwagen to Georges Bank

Definitely is all about the bait since, as you pointed out, they dont allow any Midwater trawlers up there. Although there is now a company lobbying the Canadian govt to allow them to bring in some big MW trawlers in...apparently the MW boats dont want to let any of the tuna fisheries do well.
