Slid out with an old friend aboard his new Cabo to my area for one last crack at the cobalt missiles before I go totally marlin in my mind set. We got an early start and soon were set up. Sloppier and windier than I predicted and that meant a higher chum burn rate but we adapted.
My drift was good but I wanted to get tighter to some pieces of structure I really like. We power chum/trolled for a few hours with nothing then laid up for a good path over a dandy piece of bottom. We were all busy watching the sunfish that had adopted us as its tow. The gang just gawked at the silly "half fish" when my center bait got drilled. We had a screaming run then nothing, the rod stood straight...
I hung my head in shame. I sucked... I was going through my head how bad it is to miss a mako with a double hooked rig and cursing the luck. As I reeled the line in it was slack?
Just then she caught air. More verical but less horizontal than our money fish on sunday.
We had a yougster manhandle the 150 class girl within reach of my new flyer handle and old head. I stroked the third gill. There was some commotion then all quiet..
Several more hours were spent scouring the area without so much as a sniff. With that I will call my '06 mako smackdown officially over. A good season for as few days as I fished. From that first one with Admin John to this one it was an adventure all the way...![]()
