    Painfully long day...

Got up this morn (actually yesterday now). Went and did my check up on a boat I'm looking after. All was just fine there and soon I was loading the rolling tackle box with a set of live bait rigs, a box of trolling goodies and yes the sword kit of death.
I joined up with the Poonepheews and Poon himself aboard the Marlago rocket we christened last week. A dozen gogs were added to our bait collection and off we went.
Sat down on one of my favorite ranges and almost immediately had a sail do a drive by. Minutes later the gogs were doing the "oh Shit" shuffle as another sail raised then sank away. Over an over the baits got worked but the fish had lock jaw in a big way. Then it died out all together.
I moved south where a small bite was brewin but again it shut off before we got there. We did get a mystery bite cut off. Then had a dolphin push a baiit around but also a victim of welded shut mouth syndrome.
I saw flyers begining to shower. We watched a boat hook up. I was praying it would light off but it just flat didn't. We had a strange bite that I cant remember one like it. Bang bang bang. Something hammering the bait but no take. a couple minutes later we brought it in to see the eyes had been pecked out and the tail chewed off.
It grew time to go so we did. I ran to the sword grounds , figured the set and drift and laid up for what should have been a killer drift. Nice 2-2.8 knot drift a couple degrees west of due north. Good structure, fairly good moon, stern drift. All the makings of a winner except the fish. Right as it git dark I could see the tell tale taps of a small fish. Over and over then it quit. A boat a half mile behind us on the exact same drift bowed up and decked a fatty. At the edge of the light I saw a shadow I'm pretty sure was a slob mako. It went away and I decided to check that bait. Cut clean behind the hook. That meant check em all. The right rigger bait was all the way gone. I reloaded and we continued to drift. Our bud in our slick bowed up on a second pig. We had diddly. Finally it was wave the ehite lfag time. The deep bait came up slashed to shit. Left rigger came up missing the head and the right side bait was gone and the light stick had slid all the way to the swivel. That indicates a hard run but it must have been pointed at us. Four bites and not so much as a clicker squeak.
Gorgeous ride home great day and night. No fish but hard to complain. We gave it 110%... Thanks for the company gang...

How often do the baits get regularly checked? That's a whole lot of missing bait.

About every hour they all get checked. Its a slow process checking. When checking a bait thats one bait out of three not working for you for several minutes that it takes to bring up and get back down. The first checks were ok. The third wasn't good and it was only 20 minutes til the fourth round when we were smoked again. That light stick riding all the way at the swivel indicates a hard ring but it must have been right at us.
Not a click. I set the drag right where even a strong rock will get em clicking. Wasn't rockin last niight too bad so we didn't even get the rockin clickin.

I have the dog gone things sewn on and its way way rare that one gets got without a lot of notice...

Drive-bys are the reason I don't leave the dock without a dozen big pilchards. Pitch one out on a freeline out to that picky eater and hope for the best. Them early season sails can be pretty lazy suckers. You have got to love filefish, they have a wierd eye/tail fetish. The season is still early but definately has the hints of a banner bite. Keep on Keepin on.

Agreed about the earmarks of banner. These early fronts are comming and comming. I have seen oodles of fish for being so early. Before we got out the bite was on for the morning with some guys getting siz or so. We had good fishig last week and even the week pefore in the keys. I'm in Key largo later this week and back in Islamorada the week after.
It has the "feel" of a home run season.
