This thread is not about having a barb or not. Owner put the barb there and if it is degrading after a short time in salt water it is indicative of a much larger problem. I saw first hand what happened to some of the hooks in question. Very curious to see Owner's response to this. I for one will not use them anytime soon. Way too much money is spent getting out there and back and on other gear to lose fish to hook failure. Completely unacceptable.
$2000 - $2500 in fuel! Or more! $250 per dredge! $100 in bait! $1 per hook that needs to be tossed is getting expensive?Unless the bite is really on, what? 10 - 12 hooks a day!
They're throw aways.
You are missing the point of this thread
The hooks were dissentigrating 2 hours after being taken out of the packs! They were fishing for a shot at a million dollars...expensive enough? UNACCEPTABLE! Does throw away hook mean you are supposed to take it out of the wrapper and throw it away?
Where is the Owner guy...I look forward to hearing their answer.

I can only tell you this from last week fishing the WMO with Just Released. We lost def 3 fish because of this BS with Owner. I brought this to Whiteys attention the minute we got back to the dock because I knew he was using the same hooks.
Its total BS on the part of OWNER, they dont have their formula right for the steel. Maybe we got a bad load, who the F knows but we used these hooks the last two years and either didnt notice it last year or never closely examined it because we only fished them one day and anything that touched the water was tossed the end of that day. One of the hooks on the 3 that we lost broke just below the barb and the inside of it looked like swiss cheese. I know they gotta be disposable and we treated them as such. No way that should happen after 3 hours. We had 100 hooks rigged on leader for the week, and they were kept dry. After the second day all the Owners were cut off and trashed when we realized WTF was going on. After 3 hours and after losing 3 fish that came tight I looked at the hooks and was able to basically pick the barb off and peel the hook apart layer by layer. Anybody that wants to examine the hooks feel free to go trash digging at Harbor Island there are about 60 hooks underneath all the orange crush cups.
Drags were all set between 3.5#'s to 4#s
Austin....you know not what you speak of....please
Everyone needs to be aware for the MA500. DO NOT BUY OWNERS UNTIL THIS IS ADDRESSED. You could lose some major dough over a POS hook. I think the 7/0 were 24$ for the 27 pack at Hinches. Go with the VMC or Eagle Claws. VMC's have the sharpest hook going and lasted the day but even they were thrown out after one day use and were in no shape to be fished again.

We were using the smaller packs of 7/0's from Hinches (out of bulk packs) and did not have a problem with them at all.
We did have 1 straighten itself out on a tuna, when the drag was push up hard during a release.
It's definitely shitty losing expensive baits and fish during a large billfish tournament with a lot of money on the line. I hope owner steps up I have always liked thier hooks
I am interested in the response by Owner about this issue.
Out of my billfishing clients I would say about half of them use the Owners, with the balance using either Eagle Claw or VMC. For the last 3 years, I haven't heard of this problem before. As an experiment, I just put 3 Owner 6/0 circles in a bucket of salt water( at 1:37pm) and I will check them periodically and post the results.
One question to the boats that had this problem, what rigging method are you using, floss, monel loop, swivel rig, or something else? If my assumptions are correct, I'm guessing the problems are occuring when the hooks are used with monel and/or swivel. It may be possible but the two dissimilar metals in salt water are having a chemical reaction and causing the premature disintegration of the hooks. Similar to the problem we were having with some of the collapsible dredges last season.
That being said I think I'll start another experiment with a swivel and one with monel.
Any response back from owner? Interested to what they have to say and possibly the cause of this.

Chuck, Ours were rigged with swivels and the Baithead rigs were a mono bridle crimped to the hook and we were having problems with both of them.
