My guess is they are using something different in there steel formula or something in the process is flawed. Never had that problem before, all mine broke off on first use straight out of package some were only in the water 10-15 minutes.

Now that the problem has been identified... can someone let us know if this actually effects to function of the hook as far as backing the hook out of the jaw bone is even possible with that little bit of barb?!!?
has anyone had the actual point break? going to be practicing for next year for the next several months and dont want to use them if this completely screws with the entire integrity of the hook.... |

Did nobody hear me? I have been using them for years. This year we have caught over 750 billfish on circle hooks. There are no problems with their effectivness.
Remember what I said, They are disposable hooks not ment to last any amount of time. They get salt water on them and it starts to do its magic. If you get two days out of them consider yourself lucky. They rust, the barbs break, the point wears down, they don't have a welded eye. Don't you think a hook that has these qualities will do wonders on a released fish? Keep practicing with them they are extremely effective. Good Luck. |

Chris, I think maybe you misunderstand Whitey's observation. It is not whether the circle hooks do or don't hook fish, it is a matter of the barbs disintigratingon NEW hooks in a short time on the troll. I can asure you that Whitey's observation is with new hooks as he disgards them after a single use ( at least in a tournament situation as observed).

Chris I do throw all my circle hooks out after each trip but with the Owners they are only lasting a few hours before they start to fall apart and at almost $1.00 per a hook it starts to add up fast when you have to replace them every few hours.

I have not heard of them falling apart new while trolling. Sorry I misunderstood you. I have had problems with my owner jigging hooks now that I think about it. It is only on the new ones I have bought, and on the lucaneus jig.

2 years ago we were using regular j hooks trolling ballys and caught like a 8 pound dolphin. we sling the fish in the boat and during the sling the fish comes off and lands in the cockpit. We thought the hooked pulled but no IT BROKE. on a little dolphin. Then broke one on a decent YFT. We thought we must have gotten a bad batch because they were back to back trips. but Won't use them again...

Good info on not trying to get too many days out of any circle hook. I'm currently using Eagle Claw's and noticed that it was time to replace most of them after a couple days of trolling.
Some were still fine, but, better safe. Falling apart same day is a whole other issue...and not a good one. My over-all experience with Circles has been good and I don't think this is a circle issue, but rather production or design. It will be good to see OWNER's response.
