Over Under - Morehead City Update - THANKS PORTSIDE MARINA AGAIN!

    December 17, 2008

Just back in from today's trip and we had Mike Anthony on board with his dog "Oreo" a black and white spaniel. We left the dock early due to the thick fog and we wanted to get out of the inlet ahead of the fleet. We had lines in the water by 4:50 am at NW Places. We worked the Big 10 area and found good bait readings so we worked the bait for about 2 hours without a bite. Once we had a little daylight we started working north and came across diving Gannetts and working dolphin. Our down rod went off and started pulling line with our drag set at 35lbs.We thought we had a small Bluefin on. After a short while we figured it was a foul hooked bonito, it was hooked right at the dorsal and came in sideways. Our mascot Oreo was right on it when it hit the deck. He's a fishing dog! After that short lived excitement we went back on the hunt and finished our day in 60 degree clean green water north of the Knuckle. We had piles of bait there and plan to start our day there tomorrow.

"Oreo" the fishing dog checking out dinner!

Fished the Pretty Work out of Morehead today again with Michael Anthony and his dog Oreo.We left the dock at 3:45 am in near zero visibility conditions. We worked our way out around the Knuckle and headed for the Portland wreck where we left piles of bait yesterday. We immediately began reading large bodies of bait just east of the wreck so we pounded the area for three hours without a touch. In the low visibility conditions we were unable to see any other boats within 1/8 of a mile. After working the Portland wreck area we worked out to the Atlas Wreck. On our way we hit the break where the water went from the high 50's to 62 degrees and the fog cleared. The water color went from green to clean blue water and we saw large schools of bonito rolling on the surface. We pounded this area without a touch. The radio was quiet as I heard of only 3 to 4 bites today and I was told that one fish came into Portside Marina measuring 78". After fishing the Atlas area we picked up and ran between the Shad and Knuckle and trolled our way towards the inlet without a bite. This is bluefinning if you can't go several days without a bite you have no business being here. At 2:00 PM we wrapped it up and started running in. We were about six miles from the inlet and we picked up a terrible vibration on the port side .We throttled back and checked it out but we could not get rid of it and even out of gear it was making a racket so we decided to lock the port shaft and take a slow ride in. On the way we contacted Dennard at Portside Marine and he helped us contact a diver. When we reached the Marina a diver was standing on the dock with his tank on. He spent about 2 minutes under the boat and he came up with a large piece of trawler net, we were glad to find out it wasn't a serious issue. We test ran the boat and all is well so we're ready to go again. Our next fish day looks like Saturday.
