We had the Low Profile chartered last week for the Mid Atlantic with good results. After finding great water in the Wilmington last Saturday in the Overnight Billfish tournament we decided to give it a shot there on Monday. Everything seemed to look the same there and setting the lines out we had a white on that spit the hook . We continued the day seeing 10 whites getting six to eat and releasing 2. It was tough laying the next 2 days with seeing so many fish but had a hunch that they were going no where. Back at it again on Thursday we again got a bite letting the lines out . We continued to have great action all day releasing 3 of the 7 we saw . Again in the same spot Friday we got right into the action releasing our first at 9 am and hooked up to a larger fish shortly after . This fish we decided to boat being 70 inches. When we left the dock we had to beat 75 lbs and we knew the fish was going to be right there . We weighed that fish in being 70 lbs. On Friday we did catch 2 but saw some more that just wouldnt eat. Overall we released 6 whites and boated 1 white for the tournament.
This may be the first tournament that I can remember fishing the same spot all 3 days. We concentrated all of our fishing on the east wall of the Wilmington, getting bites all over the east side. Our best action was at 38'28.00 and 73'29.41. All in all we felt we had a very good tournament seeing lots of whites each day. We got our best action trolling a hookless spreader bar in the center from the bridge and pulling that away from them as we dropped our flatlines to them . This happened numerous times during the week. If doing this you have to pay attention and get the bar away from them before they bite .
On the downside , with 21 hours of trolling we never had a single tuna bite as the yellowfin fishing remains painfully slow. We are now starting to get into our overnight season . We did our second one of the season laying up at the claw overnight getting one at 11 pm and five or six more between 5 and 8. All the bluefin were between 100 and 140 lbs. It was crazy to see some of the very best charter boats anchored up near us bluefin fishing as there isnt to much else to do besides that right now. We are all hoping the yellowfin fishing turns on soon!
