    OUCH Fish Hook accidents

Some of these shots gave me the chills.

I had a fish hook accident fishing the sod banks catching stripers on rattle traps. A schoolie decided as i was lifting him out of the water he didn't want to be caught and unbuttoned as I was lifting him out of the water. in a reaction i put my hand up to my face as the lure came sky rocketing back and embedded itself into my palm. The bite was so good I couldn't leave and had my buddy yank it out (not the smartest move in the world) I caught about 4 more bass before the bite shut down

I had to go to the ER to have one pulled out of my finger when I was a kid. Not something I ever want to re-do.

Most of them just look painful, but the one in the eyeball is scary as all get-out. I can't imagine being blinded while doing something that's supposed to be for fun and relaxation.
IE8 says this may be a phishing site....Well, DUH!!!!!!... Stupid jerks can't even spell fishing right.

    Yaarrgghh!

For some reason I have been a "hook magnet" many times over my more than fifty years of fishing. One of the worst incidents was back when I was a freshwater bassaholic and was wading a reservoir on a moonless night. This lake had some monster largemouth bass in it and I used to do a number on them at night using twelve inch black plastic worms, big black spinnerbaits, and a huge black, musky sized Jitterbug. If you are familiar with that plug, it was a big old thing with big, heavy treble hooks. The way to fish it at night was to cast it out, point the rod tip at it, and just crank it steadily along, where it would make a loud "plop, plop, plop". You couldn't see the lure and the way to hook up was to ignore the sound of a big bass blasting away at it and just keep reeling until you felt "heavy meat", then you swung the rod hard and cranked away on the big fish to get them out of the brush. Line test was 30# for fishing in the junk.

On the night in question I had a bass blast the "bug" a couple of times without getting it. It sounded huge, but I managed to just keep cranking, like I was supposed to. The fish finally stomped on the big Jitterbug only about ten feet away. I reared back to set the hook, which grabbed bass, then ripped out and came flying back at me at wharp speed. I could hear, but couldn't see it coming, but instinctively snapped my head to the left. Bad instinct! The plug hit me on the right ear and one of the big trebles went clean through my earlobe. I tried yanking on the damned thing, pulling every which way, but couldn't get that hook out. I had no tools to cut off the tip to back the hook out. But the fishing was hot, so I kept fishing with my black musky sized Jitterbug earing jangling away off my ear.

A cop pulled me over on the drive home...I was driving a little funny...but when I turned my head to the right for him to see the lure/hook/ear/blood, he dang near barfed and asked me if I wanted him to take me to the emergency room. I said no, stopped over at my folks' house and my dad, who used to be a doctor, got some of his old medical tools out and removed the hook. Took him quite a while, since the barb wound up in the cartilege because I kept fishing. Hurt like hell.

    Plop, plop, plop...blam, whack, eeeyyyowww!

No fun being a hook magnet!

My Dad & I were out catching some bluefish when I was a kid. I reeled in a bluefish & my Dad boats it. The fish is flopping around on the deck & spits the hootchie. I can remember clear as day the orange hootchie flying through the air & snagging on my Dad's lower lip. My Dad's a surgeon, so he takes a knife & opens the hole up around the hook & backs the hook out.

This photo is why I keep two sizes of bolt cutters on board, that one is easy to remove as long as you have the tools.
