This will get you pumped up crossing the bar.
Heading in from Sea, past the bridge following the channel towards the sound there is three way intersection in the channel---- straight and to the left is the channel into Pamlico sound, a hard right dog leg takes you to Wancheese, Pirates Cove etc. This is Hells Gate.
I brought my boat through there once heading from MHC up to VB. It was a flat calm day and good weather. I figured it would be no problem. As I came in the channel from the sound, I was looking for the green/red bouy to make the turn at hell's gate to head out toward the bridge. The current was ripping through there so fast that the lower portion of the buoy was submerged and I could not see the second color band on it. Once I saw it was the green/red, as it was passing along my stbd side, I had to turn into that channel, which seemed not much wider than a boat slip, with the current ripping. If I hadn't slowed down as I was approaching, by boat would probably still be sitting on a bar.
Go slow and be careful, that place can ruin your day.
Thanks Glenn, it's diff. than I thought.
this is a situation where you need an extra pair of shorts

Hey there little guy, like the name originality?![]()
Watching those videos reminds me of the spring last year going out of OI.It was a sporty type day the kind that leaves the 50 footers sitting inside the bridge waiting for the right set.Well off we went behind a prearanged tandem behind a big boy letting him pave the way.Well we just fell off the backside of an 8 plus with no back side when over the radio one of the charter guys says Holy S#$% look at this.We just cleared the swells in time to watch a 23 walkaround making the run wide open.Another captain says this needs to be on youtube!!!!They hit the first swell and it jerked them quite a bit but this Jack ass didn't back off hit the next 6 plus and launched strait up in the air.Everything that wasn't bolted down went swimming I don't know how they stayed in the boat.Well that got his attention or the passengers.......We and several other boats stayed long enough to make sure they got turned around and back in.It would have been hilarious and is now if it had not been so terrifying.God does protect the stupid and to this day I bet he still doesn't know how lucky he was.
