I haven't chimed in on this yet because many on the board have more experience offshore than me. That being said, in my last 15 or so bluefin trips out of OC, fishing the inshore lumps, every one of my medium bluefin have been on a way back of some sort. I am not disciplined enough like many to only fish wayback for bluefin so I put 2 way back and run a semi-normal spread on my short riggers and flat lines. Granted I am primarily a "weekender" and targeted bluefin 8-10 days in 2008...every fish (6) came on a wayback or wwwwtfb. Last year was probably 80%. Never been cut off nor have I cut someone else off. Sure, you have to be on the ball all day and have to bump em in and out of gear to let someone pass, or let them sink when someone cuts behind you. If I were a giant fisherman, a charter, or one of those that need to be in the pack all the time, I might have a different opinion. I am a rec guy who does what seems to work the best for me. Do what works for you. Can't wait till they show up!!

    Anthony,

No harm, no foul. I'm just a grouchy, overly sensitive old fishin' fart who sometimes see's sarcasm instead of intended fun. My bad and I apologize for getting you wrong.

I still hope that some back in your area give the technique I showed the illustration of earlier a solid try. Unless the sonar is spooking the fish (side-scan does bother hole heads (porps), I know that for sure, but I have never seen it bother tunas), putting "piles" (tip of the hat to you) of good sand eel or squid imitations right among them should work like gangbusters, like it does elsewhere. It is responsible for a lot of very good catches of all tuna species where it is being used.

Change is a difficult thing for all of us. But remember, the first guy to try that WTFBT stuff was probably viewed as a full-blown whacko back when he first started doing it and was the first one to do "such a crazy thing." New approaches, no matter how good they might be, have to be tried before they have a chance to take hold and that's all there is to it. But when they have proven out elsewhere and aren't truly new or unknown, they are usually worth a try.

Once again, I'm sorry that I misinterpreted your response. Damn, Anthony this getting old thing sure sucks! Janis Joplin said it right when she sang "get it while you can".

Good luck on the 'fins this year and I hope that the yellowfin reappear in bunches.

And hey, keep your stuff out of those weekend warriors' wheels, will ya?!
