Old or New. Which school is better?

Hey guys and gals of sportfishermen.com

I have a question I thought would start a great arguement/discussion about your opinion.

Do you like trying the latest and greatest?

    Or

Do you just go out and do your same ol' same ol' methods?

    Tell us why too..

I always try new things whether it is new techniques or brand new products, personally I want to be in the front because I believe that these fish react very different at times and I feel being open to new ideas and concepts keeps you always striving to be better. This means catching not fishing LOL

I am always willing to try something new. Even though we have success with things we do now if i see a good idea I will give it a try and if it doesn't work I can always go back to what i was doing. In the 9 mos I have been on this forum I have gotten many good ideas which I to use. Years ago I was strictly a J hook person in all the fishing i did and once I learned the art of fishing with a circle hook I was sold. Couple of years ago we were site casting live pogies at some cobia around frying pan tower and they kept spitting the J hook or the treble trailer would pull out so I made a rig with a circle and a treble and that was the fish that came to the boat because I let him swallow the bait before I set the drag I got a solid hook set in the corner of his mouth.

What do you think about being simple?

Do you like using braid to wind on's and all that mumbo jumbo?

    Or

Mono to a simple leader that you have been using for like years?

Used Wind on leaders for shark the first time in 2008.
Great stuff. While it's possible that a big ol whip tail will
break the 200# momoi diamond wind on, I no longer have to worry about 12-15' of cable flopping around with a big fish at boatside. Will be adding a Circle hook to the rig next year.
Guess that make me New school. At least whats new to me.

I guess I would say little of both. I am realatively new to the offshore thing so alot of it is new to me. I have learned alot on here and in several books that I have read. I started to get into the jigging thing late last year, although somewhat new on the east coast, overseas it has been done for sometime, at least the butterfly/fast retrieve method.

Wondering how many "really" old tricks would be "considered" new???
