OFSHORE REPORT FRIDAY 10/21/05 @ FISH TAILS

Well, after being tied to the dock for so long, because of the horrible weather up here, I knew it was time to try to get one more offshore trip in. The wind and rain has been horrible all week and the weather window was going to be small if we were going to do it, NOAA was calling for snotty conditions on Saturday. So we HAD TO DO IT! The season may be over after next weeks blow, as most of the warm water has already moved well off the edge I don’t think that the conditions coming up will help improving the temps. I guess everyone else had the same idea as us. There had to be twenty other boats and four party boats fishing the same area. This was the most boats I have seen together all season.

Headed out at 2:30am directly towards the Fish Tails where the warm water was last seen. This is the only game in town for a day trip.

We were not able to get a current satellite picture due to the cloud cover so the info we had was over 24 hours old. Arrived 6:30am, approximately 14600/43400 to find that the nice looking edge had broken up. Talked to a couple of others that spent the night fishing and they said that it fell apart during the evening. What we found was small broken up pockets of 70F water surrounded by 65-68F. To make it even tougher, throughout the day these pockets were moving quite rapidly and were hard to find again once you got out of them (even with using the MOB on the GPS it was hard to keep up). The water was a little bumpy in the morning as predicted, but not bad. It started raining around 10:00am and lasted all day.

Fortunately, we were able to crash land on some fish and convince a few dumb ones to bite. Finally, set the plastic in around 14650/43350 and worked towards the edge. First worked down the east wall where we picked up a couple of Yellows followed by a single Albie. It was quiet for a while on the west side, then got triple Albie knockdown back to the east. Spent all day in the tower, in the rain and loved it! The best part of the day was when the guys said “hey lets go home its time” and I said “just 5 more minutes, nice looking water ahead” They all laughed and said no way. Sure enough Bam!! Another Yellow in the box. Boy do I love it when that happens.

Ended up with 3 Yellows and 4 Albies. Dropped two other Yellows due to….well lets just say…..MISHAPS. All the fish came on GMs, Tuna/Wahoo series Zukers and Tuna Burners. Nothing in close on the small stuff in the flats. The crew was great kept up all day right through the cold rain and all. Thanks guys.

You guys got balls! Big ones. Looks like it was pissing pretty good in a couple pics. I'm still stuck at the dock, debating when to pull out. The new wife easily convinced me with champagne and whip cream to stay ashore. And I love it... Another GM SLAM report!! I know it gets Marty all riled up. Marty, just messing with you, man :^)
