We went out on my friends boat at 1pm yesterday for a quick trip and it turned into a memorable one. Got to about 13 miles in 300ft of water and saw a local boat bottom fishing and chumming so decided to troll around him for a while but got nothing. Continued trolling towards the dropoff and at 14 miles and about 500ft of water the right rigger with a pink bird and black and pink Wahoo Whacker goes off. The fish motored away casually and went down. I grabbed the rod and set the hook and all hell broke loose. At first I thought it was a Tuna but then this massive(500lb+) Blue Marlin flies out of the water about 100 yds on our starboard side and takes about two-thirds of the spool on his first run. Time to get the harness. Chased him down and got almost everything back and then the slugfest began. We got him to about 20 yards multiple times and he would take line as soon as he saw the boat. I was dead after 30 minutes or so and handed the rod over to my buddy. Now this guy is 6'3" 300lbs and it's not fat either. This thing started kicking his butt too but we eventually got the leader in hand after about an hour and he went under the boat. So we started all over again and got him back to the boat quicker. This time he went under the boat and wrapped the line around the engines and broke off.
The pics aren't that great but I hope you enjoy them anyway. The first pic is me when a strap came loose on the harness about halfway through the fight and someone made a wisecrack. The second one is my buddy laying it on and me waiting to leader it. The third is my first leadering attempt and the last is the best picture we got of the fish itself.
