We fished 20F line SE of OC, a little snotty- but certainly very fishable. Lines in at 8am first pull 10:30am. Quick work 80# Mako on Mackeral, released. Water temp was 63.5. Lines back out and we see a hammerhead swimming in the baits. He found the same bait too much to resist. Hammerhead released. No action for another 2 hours. Water temp now 64.5 The close deep rod w/ skirted bluefish fillet starts zipping out- then the 300#+ polaris missle shoots 15'-20' out of the water. GAME ON!![]()
10 mins later another aerial, this fish is big. Get some line, give some line, you know the drill. 15 more mins pass and Mr Mako gives us his best run of the fight and 2 more aerials. Awesome! We are 45 mins into the fight and we are now winning line back at a steady clip. Get him 35 yrds from the port stern. He tried to turn his head the other way but he was too tired. Then he rolls on his back and we see the huge white belly. As if time had stopped the line went slack and the white belly began to drift away just under the surface. We are disappointed to say the least but happy to have been blessed with the incredible show of aerobatics.
Nothing broke, the hooks just pulled when he rolled on his back. I keep second guessing myself on what I could have done different. Hooks were sharp, and hell I was sure he was hooked good after giving us 4 jumps. Oh well it was a great day all in all. We never saw a bluedog or a bluefish the entire day, which is a first! Hopefully our luck will change for the MM tournament next week!

He had never gotten a Mako, thats why we took him along...get him his first. But now that you mention it, I see why.
