OC Shark Report 6/20/09

Fished on Saturday in the OC Small Boat Tournament, and in the spirit of that tourney gave some shark rookies a very good time.

We started out trying to make some bait at the jackspot and trolled for bluefish. Pulled lines for an hour and zippo, nadda, zilch. First time that has ever happened to me with bluefish, ohh well. We pick up and run a few miles SE of the sausages and try for some bluefish again with the same results. Guess its frozen bait for us.

Set up for shark just E of the pimple a lot later than I had expected but thats ok. Had the first pull just before noon and Mike had his first shark on. Fought a small blue shark to the boat where the hook pulled. Ohh well, smiles on everyones face and baits reset. 30 min or so later guess who finally shows up, all the bluefish... After they tore up all my baits, we did manage to get a few of them in the box for fresh bait. No more action until just before 2 when the middle deep balloon takes off. Set the hook and Mike is on with his second shark of the day. This turned out to be a little better blue shark that prob went about 130. The best part of the day was when my sister looked out and saw her first pelagic shark and screams, "Holy S**T, thats really a **** shark." That was classic. They got to run their hands over the sharks skin and they all had big smiles on their face. Next time we will get a shot at ole mr. snaggletooth.

The ride in was a little hairy as after that last shark we looked up and fog had really set in. BIG, BIG thanks to the "Hurricane" for guiding us through the fog and letting me ride his stern most of the way home.

Sounds like you had a stellar day compared to ours, we never had a pull out there where we were set up. Appreciate the thank you and I'm glad I was near by and was able to help out on the ride back to the beach. Hope you have a great season. Karl

I cant thank you enough. Our radar went out on me end of last season and I want to redo all the electronics as they are 10 years old, but 5 grand is a hard pill to swallow. Lets just say that saturday has been a big motivator.

You have a few rounds on me next time im down.
