Ran to the Hambone Saturday morning with John Adams (aka the Pirate) Franky and Jen Pettolina. Our plan was to catch a bluefin and some bluefish at the Hambone and then head back in to the Fingers for some sharking. We have only caught blue sharks so far and were hoping to finally find a mako.
Put out a lure spread (GM's, cedar plugs, etc.) and after a few knockdowns that didn't come tight, we hooked our bluefin and Jen whipped it in short order. The Pirate stuck it and in we were back on the troll looking for our bluefish. Minutes later, we were covered up with bluefish, picked up and ran to the Fingers. Started our drift on the NE Fingers in 68-69 degrees. Our first bite came an hour and a half into the drift and after one jump we knew it was the right one. Jen on the rod, Franky on the wire, the Pirate locked and loaded. 5 minutes later, Blackjack's first mako was lounging on the boat side hammock dreaming of the grill! I expertly bumped the boat into gear twice to assist in the team effort!
It was only 10:30 so I decided to troll east for a bit before mutiny occurred and we headed in a little after noon. Didn't have a camera on board but we had our picture taken at Ake while waiting for the bridge.
Had mako bites, grilled tuna and mako steaks at the Marlin Club to top off the day! Wow! Congrats to Jen on her first mako (2/3 of a blue slam as well) and to the crew for a perfectly executed plan!
Next weekend...Small Boat Tournament!

Good news is we had a 2 schools of bluefin come right up to the boat that were in the 150# class but they wouldn't touch a jig or anything. I wanted to get up on the troll for them but we were catching a mako every half hour so we stayed on the drift.
