That darn wx man got us again. Was going to go Sat afternoon and try to get my wife her first dolphin. Schedules didn't work out with the rest of the crew, so we checked the wx and pushed it to Sun morning.
Woke up Sunday morning, checked wx again - it changed - fishable, but getting windy in the afternoon. Wife really wants a mahi, so we went. Almost as soon as the sun came up, it was starting to blow a bit out of the south on top of the big swells. As soon we stopped, her comment was "these waves are HUGE" - not good.
Started between the bone and dog. We never used the "T" word, but did run one WB with some silent hopes. Other than that, ran a dredge, nakeds and small stuff while hoping and hoping for a stupid dolphin. Fished till 1130 working the dog then down to the middle sausage with nothing more than one small pull on the WB. Seas were getting nasty and storms were heading east - that was the last thing we needed - no mahi and getting her caught in a storm. We picked up and ran in chop to the twin wrecks....ran 4 lines hoping for a bottom of the nineth dolphin or a spanish. No good. Picked up at 1 and ran like hell for the inlet as heard of storms coming fast.
The only good thing all day was that we beat the storms in. EVerything else was pretty dead out there with the best catch in our area that I heard of was 2 dolphin and a hoo. I've two bait pens full of live spot (took some for bailing, but it was too rough).....I think we may just bottom fish or something until some action starts.
Oh a few have asked, we ran a very comfortable 25 knots with the quartering seas all the way in until the last 4.5 miles. That's when we bumped it up b/c of the storms to 32....it was fine in the short chop, just wet.
Talked to/passed SharkJP - on the SE corner of the dog around 10 am - looks like I should I have stayed there.....oh well.
