Wow Glenn, you almost sounded like politician just now.

I honestly don't care what he said during the campaign. Between the economy tanking, the falure of the Republicans to come up with a decent candadate and Bush's precipetious drop in popularity, his election was inevitable.

What I can't stand is his closeing the door on opportunities to reduce our dependance on oil imported from people that don't like us. That and the fact that offshore drilling will create thousands of well paying jobs and actually move us closer to a production economy instead of the importation and consumption economy.

And even worse is it's done to appease the extremests who he has surrounded himself with (which I guess shouldn't be a supprise because he is and always has been one of them)

    Oil Reserves in US

Here's an interesting read, important and verifiable information :

About 6 months ago, the writer was watching a news program on oil and one of the Forbes Bros. was the guest. The host said to Forbes, "I am going to ask you a direct question and I would like a direct answer; how much oil does the U.S. have in the ground?" Forbes did not miss a beat, he said, "more than all the Middle East put together." Please read below.

The U. S. Geological Service issued a report in April 2008 that only scientists and oil men knew was coming, but man was it big. It was a revised report (hadn't been updated since 1995) on how much oil was in this area of the western 2/3 of North Dakota , western South Dakota , and extreme eastern Montana ...... check THIS out:

The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska 's Prudhoe Bay, and has the potential to eliminate all American dependence on foreign oil. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates it at 503 billion barrels. Even if just 10% of the oil is recoverable... at $107 a barrel, we're looking at a resource base worth more than $5..3 trillion.

"When I first briefed legislators on this, you could practically see their jaws hit the floor. They had no idea.." says Terry Johnson, the Montana Legislature's financial analyst.

"This sizable find is now the highest-producing onshore oil field found in the past 56 years," reports The Pittsburgh Post Gazette. It's a formation known as the Williston Basin , but is more commonly referred to as the 'Bakken.' It stretches from Northern Montana, through North Dakota and into Canada . For years, U. S. oil exploration has been considered a dead end. Even the 'Big Oil' companies gave up searching for major oil wells decades ago. However, a recent technological breakthrough has opened up the Bakken's massive reserves.... and we now have access of up to 500 billion barrels. And because this is light, sweet oil, those billions of barrels will cost Americans just $16 PER BARREL!

That's enough crude to fully fuel the American economy for 2041 years straight. And if THAT didn't throw you on the floor, then this next one should - because it's from 2006!

    U. S. Oil Discovery- Largest Reserve in the World

    Stansberry Report Online - 4/20/2006

Hidden 1,000 feet beneath the surface of the Rocky Mountains lies the largest untapped oil reserve in the world. It is more than 2 TRILLION barrels. On August 8, 2005 President Bush mandated its extraction. In three and a half years of high oil prices none has been extracted. With this motherload of oil why are we still fighting over off-shore drilling?

They reported this stunning news: We have more oil inside our borders, than all the other proven reserves on earth. Here are the official estimates:

    - 8-times as much oil as Saudi Arabia

    - 18-times as much oil as Iraq

    - 21-times as much oil as Kuwait

    - 22-times as much oil as Iran

    - 500-times as much oil as Yemen

    - and it's all right here in the Western United States .

HOW can this BE? HOW can we NOT BE extracting this? Because the environmentalists and others have blocked all efforts to help America become independent of foreign oil! Again, we are letting a small group of people dictate our lives and our economy.....WHY?

James Bartis, lead researcher with the study says we've got more oil in this very compact area than the entire Middle East -more than 2 TRILLION barrels untapped. That's more than all the proven oil reserves of crude oil in the world today, reports The Denver Post.

Don't think 'OPEC' will drop its price - even with this find? Think again! It's all about the competitive marketplace, - it has to. Think OPEC just might be funding the environmentalists?

    This man is VERY consistent..

with one exception, all his decisions serve to damage or destroy the US as we know it. And at an accelerated pace.

That exception is for using drones to kick ass in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

I wish him a brain tumor before we have riots in the streets, but that is just me!

For those that missed it, this scholar today spoke to an association of import/export businesses and stated that the US is the largest exporter in the world. Fact is, we are no 4 or 5!

    What a dumbass.

I guess he was winging it away from the teleprompter.

The saddest part of this is, the jobs that it could-would open up for us. With this depressed job market, every thing should be done to boost the economy and this would be a boost. It seams to me that this administration only means to keep us down and not get the nation back on its feet...this is a real shame...

I can only feel that this Administration is moving us more toward a "Scholiast" Government as it is no longer "We The People". I is not what we want, it is what the Administration wants, with no regards to the wants of the populous of the people.

That and the fact that offshore drilling will create thousands of well paying jobs and actually move us closer to a production economy instead of the importation and consumption economy.I disagree and you are living a pipe dream if you think opening up our off-shore waters will have any material impact on oil prices or have a material impact on our need to import the majority of our petroleum requirements.

And even worse is it's done to appease the extremests who he has surrounded himself with (which I guess shouldn't be a supprise because he is and always has been one of them)I agree that Obama has alligned himself with many that we would consider extremists. However, there are many, many moderates that feel the potential benefits are just not there right now--- first on the list would be George Bush, Sr. that implemented the ban

    Bert
Jon, you're only comprehending what you want to believe and not reading objectively. The fact of the matter is, the reserves you speak of are largly not even technologically feasible (I know a portion of the reserves are technically possible), and only a small amount is economically feasible, even at the $100- $110/ barrel price range. A major problem with the two fields you reference is even if one can technically get the oil out from under the mountains, and then do it at a cost that is within current world prices ( which it can't ), one must transport this oil from the middle of no where to market (pipeline). The investment required to build a pipeline in the mountains would be huge and extreemly risky for investors.
What people refuse to accept is that there is do doubt there is oil down there, but you can't get it to market at today's prices. If the oil companies could make attractive profits from this domestic oil, I can guarantee their lobbiests would be all overWashington. We would be flooded with this in the news as well as their ads on TV and other media---- I haven't heard much of a peep about this since the elections, and certainly not much from the petroleum industry crying to allow such drilling--- if hey could make a buck, rest assure we would have heard aout it in the last year and a half. In fact, even when oil was @ $150/bbl you didn't hear any pleas from oil companies to open the closed areas.
This whole off-shore thing that took the country my storm during the elections is nothing but a political red herring--- I don't like the fact that we must rely on foreign oil from nations that don't like us any more than the next guy--- but there is no sense in putting my head in the sand in promoting a cause that will not mean anything.

Agree with Glenn on the Bakken oil play...I had written something earlier on a different computer and forgot to submit it.

The bakken oil is shale oil and therefore the wells must be fracked and horizontally drilled in order to obtain. As previously said this is not economically feasible, but the folks on the Fort Berthold reservation are making a killing selling that land to oil companies.
