We ran out to the 800 line and were a little above the fleet. The break had a good weed line that was 78ish on the warm side and 69-71 on the cold.We went up and down the warm side and put a half dozen gaffers in the box and 2 that got off.The cold side yielded 3 yellowfins blue and white islander chain with a big hoo in the trap position was the ticket.Capt Jake from the Matador was next to us most of the day and he passed on some insider info(Thanks Jake). That was the good part of the day something toothie decided it wanted to eat my planer..............so it did.And now for the unacceptable disaster,Im running Avet pro 30's and 50's with braid backing and a mono topshot. These reels were purchased from a reputable west coast company that specializes in this type of set up.Well you hear that spectra needs to be packed on tight and crossed once and a while so it don't dig into itself................WELL IT DOES CAUSE IT WILL!!!That same islander chain explodes and the reel is screaming 1/3 spool is gone before I can even slow down just as we get the rod down and the angler ready the reel stops dead(down to 1/4 spool) and the rod just keeps bending then POW sounds like a gunshot the line comes back with so much force it cuts my buddies face.I can only guess but a few eyes were caught around us and no 50lb yellowfin ran like that(80lb mono 100lb jb braid 20lbs of drag)all in all a great day but I sure do take it personal when a good one gets away.
Pretty work. Yeah, I just hope your buddy's cheek is okay. It sucks to loose the mammy but, you'll get em' next time. Yeah, I'm def. not a big fan of braid. On the planer rod it's a must unless you run geen dot instead of braid. Get back out there this weekend and give em hell this weekend
