This is a photo from two or three years ago. Giant bluefin season Morehead City. It is just a crappy photo from a cell phone but everytime I see it, it takes me right back to exactly how I felt. This isnt a picture bragging about a catch. It aint a picture about being happy. This picture just flats pisses me off and makes me remember the shitty side of fishing.
Here's the story. I had just got back to Morehead after a weekend visit home where I found out my now wife was pregnant with my daughter. It had been two weeks of miserable cold weather and rough water without a bite. Money was starting to dry up for me and faith in the fishing was long gone. I was completely over it, tired of getting up at 230 am, to fish on a freezing cold, wet piece of shit, and homesick when this happened. She wasn't a New England sized pig, but she'd do. 93'' 430 pound core- built like a bigeye, short and fat. $17.35/pound. This fish was the start of a streak of near $20 a pound fish. We caught 5 more in the next 9 days with 3 of the cores going over 400#. Who cares about the cold when there's money to be made? It ended up all being a dream though. The asshole I was working for (Chris Senior, a fish broker from Hampton Bays, NY owner of TNT) ended up ripping me off for these fish. By my calculations, he still owes me somewhere in the neighborhood of $7-9K- a lot of money when you got a pregnant woman to take of. All I got of this fish was the picture. AHHHH the memories. ![]() ![]() My vote goes for Conner and Carson's picture. Carson looks happier than a retard in a ball pit in that picture. Last edited by capt. jakeg; 10-13-2009 at 06:31 PM. |

This is my favorite
![]() The fish was caught by the guy on the left off of Apache Pier in Myrtle Beach, SC in July '05. I had just caught a jumbo spanish and was putting a new bait out when this whopper (est ~130) nailed the rig next to mine. After about a 45 minute fight he tried to take it to the beach, but got down to three wraps on the spool of a Penn 15kg so had to back to the end. 30 minutes later we got back to the beach. The guys son and I cleared the beach except for one, shall we say, large woman. They dropped the rod to me, and I got to fight the fish for a few minutes while Bryan was getting down. The braid on the reel came "this close" to slicing the woman in the surf's arm. We finall got the fish in the breakers, I went to grab it and it pulled away from me the first time i grabbed the mouth. Afraid it had pulled the hooks, I proceeded to tackle it until help came. We got scales and a pic, then walked her back out in the surf where she swam away strong. As we were walking back to the pier, the cops pulled up on a golf cart and said somebody told them we landed a great white shark. There was a huge crowd on the beach when we landed it, and I guess somebody was a little confused. We had to show pictures and scales to convince the cops otherwise. What a great day. Here is the first time my dad (handicapped, left leg amputee) and I went out of sight of land on our own boat. Landed a 33 and mid 20's king.

My girl's first stand-up striped marlin off the Golden Gate Bank north of Cabo. She was always leary of trying it but surprised herself with how easily she was able to land it and how much more fun it was then having her butt in a chair. A 10 minute battle and a healthy release.... what could be better?
Gotta say, really like the toad Rooster. |
