"There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot." --STEVEN WRIGHT
the california department of fish and game has rules for everything. salmon cannot be filleted at at sea. ling cod can with a minimum lenth for the fillet. rock cod need a patch of skin, albacore need a patch of skin.
by filleting out the fish immediately, i can save room and ice the fish down more effeciently. i can get by with 100 pounds of ice instead of 500. the quality of the meat is fabulous. you also save a ton of time at the end of the day. the only down side is that i do not get to reel in any fish, but that's ok. i leave the reeling to the noobs. i gaff and cut.

You are not bound by NMFS regs?
I wish I could filet at sea, for the reasons you mentioned, and carcass disposal
if there are regs, i am sure we are bound to them. i am active on a half dozen west coast boards and i have never seen a discussion about regs forbidding the filleting of albacore at sea. i can tell you that the practice is common. i was told by california DFG game warden that he appreciated my leaving the entire skin on the fillet rather than just a half inch. he said it made identification easier. alan
