We try to bring live bait everytime whether it be snapper blues, spots, or penut bunker. There have been nights were we got most of our bites on the live bait other times none. I would def suggest trying to bring some out with you everytime. It can never hurt to have as much a variety of baits with you. One time I remember catching the biggest tunas of the trip with Ballyhoo in the outriggers just under the surface.

    All work when live:
    Snappers
    Porgies
    Bunker
Butterfish (hard to find and hard to keep alive)
    Squid

We always catch our own live bait.

I can also recomend throwing a net for mullet, those and spot seemed to work the best. tried little blues a few times and it seemed like the tuna ignored them, or took the spot over the bluefish

The only place I was ever able to catch live Butterfish was in the Shinnecock canal.

You can bring some live bait as mentioned above such as spot, peanut bunker and smaller bluefish or any other hearty fish that can withstand the environment of the livewell on a 65+ mile run offshore. The most important thing is to have a couple squid jigs and sabiki rigs ready to go on spinning gear. We got ambushed by a gigantic school of tinker mackerel in the south poormans last October and were catching 4-5 fish on each drop filling the live well in minutes. There sure was plenty of live bait there that night but no tuna on them only a hand full of gaffers.

We sometimes bring live porgies (scup) in the late summer when the bite is slow. Make sure that you use a pair of scissors to cut off their spines - yellowfins spit them out if they get spiked by their fins. They are hardy and last a long time in the well. We also use live eels in the fall when the medium bluefins are in the canyon - they work best on the deep lines for some reason. They last even longer than scup.

    circle hooks

All i use are circle hooks when chunking at the canyon, even on the live baits. With the rods being fished out of the rod holders, the circles set themselves for you.
