Norfolk Canyon 7/1 (a little late...)

Fished with Dave T on board Oblivion out of VA Beach on Sunday. We were hoping to skirt the weather and get out early and be able to ride the waves home on the forecasted NE Blow...well it worked out perfectly.

We left Rudee at 3:20am and headed to the Canyon tip. First boat out there and lines in at 50f. Before we have the 5th line out the bird chain with Ilander is smoking. Lee wrestles a fat 69 pound YFT to the boat. Soon thereafter some more bites then we boat a second buff. Some mystery bites then Dave sees a marlin come in on the spreader...it quickly peels off and inhales a long rigger sea witch/bally bait. 50 is screaming nicely...no jumps but based on what Dave saw and the run it made it was guessed to be a small Blue. Fished came unglued after a minute or two...

We found a nice weed line at the tip and had 4 or 5 fish come in at once, one broke off, three just came unglued but we got one more buff. Quiet for a couple hours as we worked the North wall in some nice bait/marks and managed one more fish. We proceeded to the south wall and got hammered 3 different times. A quad (got 2 of them), a double (got 1) then a triple and got all three of them. Fish were all over the long riggers, bird chain and the Squidnation rasta bar with a GM trailer. I think we got three on that bar. Other bars had some vicious hits but came unglued.

Anyway, we ended up with 9 nice YFT's from 50-69 pounds and probably had like 20 bites total. The Blue would have been the icing on the cake but it was not meant to be. The winds cranked up around 1pm and we called it a day a little while later but had nice following quarter seas for the ride. Made 24 knots in Dave's 31 Alby with some Ozzy playing and some nice cold drinks for the trip. A great day for sure...

Bill, I need a new shirt

I'm shooting for Saturday. Really, really itching to get my 24 Alby out there...

Hope we have some decent weather. The ride home on sunday would have been doable in my boat but not a hell of a lot of fun.

    Bill,

I'll be out there Sat so long as the forecast holds. Should be around the 30f line inside the canyon around 6:30am or so...then will work out to 50f and deeper as needed.

Good luck out there. I'll monitor 79...if I can help out just let me know.
