NMFS has new bag limits for BFT 2008

Today NMFS highly Migratory div callerd me to infrom me that the recreation Large school Small Medium Bluefin tuna allocation exceeded our last year allocation by 170 mt for a total of 362 mt. This has caused NMFS to lower the bag limet for this size fish tio one fish per day with the school fish remaining the same at one fish per boat perday.
I called RFA and spoke to Jim Donofrio and he agreeded tha we should convine a meeting in march with the RFA Adhoc Tuna Committee. If we can put it together this meeting will occur.

Why didn't they shut the fishery down before it went 170 MT over the quota? Sounds like bullshit to me.

Because that would have made sense Andy!......I don't get it!!

Any other time, they would close it down when they got close.

NMFS has a bad habit of letting the recreational fishing go over the quota, but will always shut the commercial fisheries down even when there is an extreme amout of quota left to catch. Don get me wrong, I am just as much for recreational as I am for commercial, all I am saying is that they have never made good "COMMOM SENSE!".

Its such hogwash.........they keep lowering our quota and for what? the commercial season down in MHC should have been extended into February. The fish were still there.......problem is from what I have read is NMFS doesnt have the goddamn spine to put ICCAT in their place. Mr. hogarth tried but they counterd with a threat of we will shut you down...so he backed down. meanwile the uc nations are going over their quota by I think, 20,000 mt's a year.....but they keep getting more..lol its such a joke. we have what 5 purse seiners here on the east coast and one of them converted to herring.
they have a total of 375 purse seiners working the med...gee that makes sense.....but the only real way for all this to stop is very simple.....
    1) pressure Japan to stop buying at such a high rate....
    and
    2) make the fishery world wide for commercial and rec...rod and reel.
    there problem solved.
What we do over here doesnt compare to the slaughter they perform on Bluefins over there. They take all sizes, it doesnt matter. They Have a tuna reserve the same way we have oil reserves(Japan) Problem is the Japanese treat the Bluefin like a never ending supply of fish, well if they keep up this demand for the fish it will be gone in a few years. Take them while you can because they wont be here long. And its sad to say that even if we stopped fishing for them they would still be gone in a blink of an eye.

    Well Said Capt Kobey

If I read this right correctly this would allow one in the school catagory which is 27-47 inches and one in the 47-73 inch size that included large school and small medium. If I am correct then we lost one fish 47-73 inches but if the new regulation become effective then two bluefin total per day rather than 3 as it is now as I did not see anything mentioned about the school catagory of 27-47 inches if I read this right. The whole bluefin thing is a mess and everyone knows it but without world wide conservation what ever we do in US waters is not going to matter one bit when fishing with rod and reel. I do believe every bluefin brought back to port should be tagged and reported as done in MD and NC to provide accurate landing data. Will be watching this subject with a close eye to see what develops. May have to learn a new word this coming season called WAHOO and wonder if they eat butterfish?

I have the same question as Whitey, WHY DIDN'T THE NMFS TAKE ACTION?

They change the fricken rules on us all the time but when it counts...they don't? Makes no sense. Maybe the NMFS is too busy trying to increase longlining and they don't have time for this.

    And the results?
    • They've put a big dent in a fishery that's already in miserable shape
    • We lose all credibility in the international community. We've been pointing at every other country about their overfishing and this really hurts our position to effect change.
    • I am disgusted. How much are we paying these people and why are we not getting the job done. Under their watch too many species have been depleted while mindless fees and regulations are added. THEY SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE AND ACCOUNTABLE

Future generations are going to look back on the NMFS as one of the worst environmental disasters of all time.
