NMFS Change in retention for Charter/Headboat Cat for September
NMFS ADJUSTS ATLANTIC BLUEFIN TUNA DAILY RETENTION LIMITS
http://www.nmfspermits.com/other/Sep...ion_notice.pdf "NMFS adjusts the daily retention limit for the commercial General category and the recreational Charter/Headboat Atlantic bluefin tuna (BFT) fishery for September of the 2005 fishing year. See the library for a table listing retention limits and their duration. Persons aboard a vessel issued an HMS Charter/Headboat permit may retain and land BFT under the quotas applicable to the Angling category or the General category. The size category of the first BFT retained on an HMS Charter/Headboat will determine the fishing category applicable to the vessel that day. In addition to the daily retention limit, the Angling category trophy fishery for large medium and giant BFT (measuring 73 inches or greater) is open in all areas, with a retention limit of one fish per vessel per year. All BFT landed MUST be reported within 24 hours of landing to the www.nmfspermits.com website or by calling 888-872-8862 or, if landed in the states of North Carolina or Maryland, to a reporting station prior to offloading. Information can be obtained in North Carolina by calling (800) 338-7804, and in Maryland by calling (410) 213-1531. NMFS may determine that additional actions are necessary to ensure available quota is not exceeded or, to enhance scientific data collection from, and fishing opportunities in, all geographic areas. Subsequent adjustments to the daily retention limits, if any, shall be announced through publication in the Federal Register. |

Just another "exception"......can they make it any MORE confusing????
Well, it's easy for us HMS Angling category guys, SO FAR..... I have a friend with the General permit, and he called NMFS directly, and someone working there told him he could take any BFT as long as it was 27" CFL (one per day tho). I told him the guy was wrong, that he can't keep ANY BFT under 73", and that he better check on it.....I even showed him the website with the regs.....he could have gotten screwed because one of their OWN guys told him very bad misinformation! By the way, even our local DEM told him he was fine keeping any BFT 27" or larger (one per day). They don't even know the laws either, and are the ones fining guys at the ramps/docks for "violations" These guys need to get their heads out of their asses and learn their CURRENT regs before adding MORE. |

Private boats got screwed again.
Angling boats can keep one fish per year over 73". I guess they realize that's completely unenforcable and figure it's just one over 27" General Category is the commercial category. |

Bluefin Regulations as of Sept 1
Talked to contact at NE office of NMFS in MA about 10 minutes ago for clarification on regs. Same as before July 31. Three fish under 73 for charter-Headboats and two can be between 27-47 inches. I am not sure on this but rec's can get one 27-73 inch per day and one per giant trophy fish over 73 inches per year. I know many of you will find this unfair but I am just the messager and only hope some of these fish show up in our local waters real soon but right now most of the bigger bluefin are about 90 miles south of SJ. I expect some of these larger tuna to show up along the 30 fathom line around Hot Dog real soon if the bait is present or even at places like Massey's or the Hambone in September. Please take the extra time to call in your bluefin catch so accurate records are established. This is very important for all of us.
Capt John

That only 2 of said fish Could be between 24'' to less than 47'' and 1 fish that HAD to be Between 47'' to less than 73'' Now with that said and the way its written YOU CAN TAKE 3 fish all of wich are 47''to less than 73'' !!!!! and 1 fish 73'' or over per Year and if you take that giant ...Then thats it for the day ! Am i correct ? im Just trying to figure out if i have this correct Captain John can you make this clear please ....... also does this change for Sept revert back to what was in place ,Before July 31st ??
