NJ GUYS.....

Hey guys, just curious to see when everyone's first trip out to the inshore lumps for tuna was last year. We normally troll or chunk the CIGAR early on until the Canyons turn on..... Lets get a countdown going!!!!!

I was tunas busing just off shore of there during the South Jersey shark tourney. I guess it would have been around the 28 mile wreck or maybe 750 Square. Should have fished the Cigar I think there was a big one caught there if I remember correct.

If I remember correctly which is rare any more.. .the 22 of May 2006 we heard Mojo on the radio. We were in the Baltimore. Admin went on the pins hard. We found Joe 20 minutes later coming from the deep and tucked in behind him, running to the northern tip of the Poormans....damn that sled is fast. The tunars were in the top layer and plentiful.

The past few years the tuna have showed up in the canyons before the inshore lumps.

I'll never forget the early season run of yft last spring. It was 2 weeks of limits and back at the dock by 3 pm. One day we actually left the dock at 9 am ran to the Baltimore fished for 2 hours had our limit turned around and were back at the dock and cleaned up by 4 pm. There was like a 7 degree break and all the fish were feeding on the cool side. We were in about 70 - 80 fathoms in between the Balt and the Poormans.

Last year we fished a filament of 63 degree blue water 50 miles beyond the 100 fathom line on the 1st of may. Kept a bluefin and released a bluefin both on canyon runner rainbow squid bars.

Two years ago we had a limit of yellowfin on a may 4th-5th overnighter in the toms. There was a 47-67 degree break over 3 miles...bluefin were in 60-66 degree water and yellowfin were in the 66-67 degree water and the fish ate anything.

In my opinion the right combination of water, weather, willingness to go is all it takes.

I think inshore around the Cigar and the other 20 fathom haunts will turn on sometime in June. Probably more toward the end of June. The first canyon trip I fished last year was the 2nd week in June and we found that break in 500 fathoms of the Wilmington but nothing was on it. A couple guys fished that same eddy down in the Baltimore that same day and did well on longfin and yellowfin. The next weekend that eddy swung down into the poormans and I fished with Scott on the Playmaker and we slammed them. I think we went 12 for 17 on yellowfin. It was a great way to start the 2007 offshore season. Fish were in 50 fathoms of the poormans in 67 degree water.

Inshore fish were on ballyhoo WWWWWB and canyon fish were on ballyhoo and spreader bars in tight

all in all, we did hardly anything on the troll last year, just bull dolphin and longfins..... Chunking did the trick last year all in all, both inshore and in the blue water.

I feel your pain. Other than that trip to the poormans the yellowfins were few and far between on the troll which sucked. I did hear some guys did good on them in the deep though (800+ fathoms) but that's a hell of a run for us. Let's hope this year is better.
