Thats when the big momma makos come out to play. Billy Verbanas used to run to 1000f at night for monster makos.

You can fish them overnight on the 20-30 line too but mostly have to deal with blue dogs.

Inshore bay sharking is fun at night with sand tigers and brownies cruising around

I know of many Mako's and Threshers that have been killed at night, not just in the Canyon's but inside the 30 fat. line.. I believe that Mako's become more agressive at night..

Check out the Melton forum and they explain how they target huge threshers at night. We get a large run of threshers inside 30 fathom every year here in NJ. I have sent customers to the old grounds in june/july every year and they hook plenty without even targeting them. I bet if you targeted them at night you would be amazed at your results. Oh and make sure your ID's are correct we get a few great whites that time of year also. Don't mistake one of them as a Mako hefty penalty. Good Luck Tim

Threshers have been caught on the ridge. I've been hooked up on the bank with threshers on a few occasions. Any of that structure will hold sharks. You just got to put in your time. Stop by Capt Tates and ask for Tim, I'll help any way I can. As with any shark trip you need to set your drift up to cover the most amount of structure as possible. Fresh bunker and mackerel seems to work for them. Thanks Tim

    NIGHT SHARKS? OH YEAH!

Meant to get to this one sooner. First, roger on that best catch - black Labby Bailey - on your avatar, Gettinwet. Best catch, best friend, best everything.

My buds and I have done a lot of night sharking out here on the left side. A lot of our shark structure is very, very close - as little as a mile or less offshore, so night fishing is easy and fast. We can run out, fish one prime tide, and be back at the dock in two or three hours. And as Mako Wish said, the makos, big and small, get nutso at night. That means one thing to me...be careful! I consider safety the key factor in all shark fishing, but it becomes even more important at night and there are rules as far as when and how to set hooks, fight fish, and when and how to gaff or release sharks that are important in daytime fishing, but that are doubly important at night (see the picture below for proof of that one...just imagine it happening in the dark, or just as he comes flying into the lights).

Threshers are very different than makos when it comes to night fishing. The pelagics and longtails that most of us fish for are predominantly daytime feeders. In fact, none of us have ever caught one in all of the night fishing that we have done, and we have done it when they were here solid and all around us.

Bigeye threshers, on the other hand, are different. We have caught a few of them at night and Tim over in Hawaii murders them. But when it comes to the other species, daytime is best and trolling and power chumming are the best ways of catching them.

Wherever they swim, there are many threshers and makos on and in the case of the threshers, inside the twenty line, but I say again...

Be careful, be careful, be careful!!!

Imagine that flying chainsaw coming at you in the dark! I call that "the definition of the expression, "Holy shit!"

i would try the areas around the misty blue or the triple wrecks. use a 3 rod spread. one a couple feet above the bottom one at 60 feet and one about 20 feet down. for bait use bunker and mackeral fillets both hooked in the pointy end of the bait. i like to use either white or clear ballons and put a glow stick in them so you can see them at night. also always have a pitch bait ready you never know when a big girls going to sneak threw the other baits and come right to the chum bucket. i would rather fish at night due to the boat traffic.

And to add that 28mile wreck has produced some banner catches for me at night aswell as 19fathom lump.I would use bluefish fillets for bait aswell as A whole bluefish (med-to small size is best)along with mackeral fillets. If bluefish or dogfish are present it may become impossible to keep whole mackeral and mackeral fillets on your line this to some becomes frustrating,to combat that use whole bluefish and whole bluefish if not bitten will last the whole night (should still work bait in and out though) as mako will sometimes be attracted to the moving bait and may follow your bait and float to the boat thats where A pich bait comes into play. ps.I almost forgot using bunker chum works best!(for us anyway!)

I too have used the sticks in my balloons at night, but if you got alot of blue dogs around they will zone in on that glowing balloon like a crack whore, makes for a interesting night watching them eat your glowsticks.
